Designed by Canadian-based director of photography and freelance cameraman René J. Collins, the Red Eye was designed for shots where, due to focal length or space limitations, the camera operator may not be able to get the wide shot needed. It also works well in shots where a dramatic angle is needed to increase perspective, to accentuate the effects of fast motion, or on shots that float through a room on a steadycam, to smooth movement.

Bulk and weight have been eliminated by using a durable and compact, high index, high clarity optical material which substantially reduces the size of the lens. It also feature a multi-layer anti-reflective coating to increase light transmission to close to 100% for optimum image clarity, contrast and sharpness. In addition, coatings offer an extra degree of scratch resistance and improve water repellence.

The Red Eye wide-angle adapter works differently than a zoom through adapter in that it does have a focal point, but it exists in front of the lens as a virtual image. The only means of seeing the image with a camera lens is to use a macro adjustment, auto focus feature, or manual focus.

This is a non-zoom through adapter when used on the front of broadcast lenses; however, in most cases when using HDV or DV camera, in auto focus mode, the camera operator will be able to maintain focus while zooming using the Red Eye. Although this is a function of the camera more than the Red Eye wide-angle adapter, nonetheless, you will be able to cover roughly ˝ the zoom range using the HDV or DV camera’s auto focus feature.

The Red Eye allows you to use your existing lens hoods and matte boxes. With the lens hood already attached to your lens, simply screw the Red Eye adapter on your lens.
