Convergent Design Announces the Gemini RAW Recorder

Today Convergent Design announced a new version of the Gemini 4:4:4 recorder, called the Gemini RAW. This new device does not replace the original Gemini 4:4:4, but adds some additional features and functionality. Gemini RAW adds Raw recording, more inputs and outputs, plus the ability to record up to four cameras simultaneously.

At the same time, it maintains the same small size, weight and low power requirements of the original Gemini. With six SDI inputs/outputs, the Gemini RAW can record up to two uncompressed signals at the same time, or four (genlocked) signals in AVID DNxHD. It can show all four signals on the screen at the same time, and act as a switcher to output the desired signal. This makes the Gemini RAW ideal for multi-camera use, and the perfect tool for any video assist department.

Of course, the new Gemini RAW is also a raw recorder. It will have built-in support for many RAW cameras, including ARRI ALEXA, as well as many RAW Point of View (POV) cameras. It will also support the newest RAW cameras that are just now being announced. We have already heard about some of these cameras, but NAB will no doubt have more in store for us.

Depending on the source camera, the Gemini RAW can record up to 48 frames per second (fps), 60 fps, or 120 fps. This is also big news because the ALEXA can output a 60p raw signal, and the Gemini RAW will be able to record that.

Lastly, and perhaps most interesting to me, the Gemini RAW supports 4K Raw for recording and playback. A special feature is included so that the real 4K images can be output to a 4K monitor using four HD-SDI outputs. This recorder could be the missing link for many future devices and needless to say, we are really looking forward to seeing it at NAB.
