NAB 2015: ALEXA Mini & Camera Mobility Options

We recently covered the breakthrough mobility of the ALEXA Mini, and we have the camera in our NAB booth this year.

In the first configuration, it is fully rigged out with Arri accessories including a shoulder plate and battery plate. Although the camera is small and lightweight at 5 lbs, it can be built up for standard operation. You'll also notice that the ALEXA Mini is actually mounted upside down. You can mount the camera either way as the sensor is completely centered, making it usable for a variety of applications.

Second, we mounted the ALEXA Mini on the MōVI M15 and rigged it out using lightweight options including top and bottom plates from Arri and the Misfit Atom Mattebox from Bright Tangerine. I also used the new wireless system from Freefly, the WEDGE, which is a wireless focus tool that integrates with the remote to pull focus using a variety of different motor systems.

Finally, I looked at underwater and aerial applications. Gates recently announced their underwater housing for the ALEXA Mini and we have a prototype in our booth. Not only is the housing designed specifically for the ALEXA Mini, it includes a monitor box that will hold the Transvideo Starlight monitor that monitors the camera's output as well as provide menu controls. Lastly, the Freefly ALTA, the latest drone from Freefly, is a great aerial application for the ALEXA Mini. It can hold up to 15 lbs, and a MōVI gimbal can snap on easily using their Toad in the Hole system. The gimbal can be mounted on the top or bottom, and the ALTA can fly for up to 15 minutes.

Watch the video above to learn more about all of these mobile applications for the ALEXA Mini.
