NAB 2019: Hive Lighting Bumble Bee 25-C

I stopped by the Hive booth to chat with Jonathan Miller and check out their brand new Bumble Bee 25-C, an incredibly versatile and portable light, launching at NAB 2019.

Weighing in at only 1lb, the Bumble Bee 25-C is Hive's most lightweight and compact light yet. As the name suggests, the Bumble Bee 25-C contains all the color controls of the Hive C series (i.e. Hive 100C and 200C) in a 2.5" long and 4" diameter light for $300. This means 0-100% dimming, 0-100% saturation control, 360-degree hue control, and 1650K - 8,000K color temperature.

The output corresponds to a 150W incandescent bulb and only pulls 25 Watts. It can be powered via 12 volt XLR or a 100-240 V input via a universal wall output or battery.

Also brand new at NAB 2019 is the launch of the Android version of the Bluetooth mobile app, Hive Shot, previously available for iOS only. As well as DMX control, you can control the Bumble Bee 25-C via this app. This means that you or your lighting team can control saturation, hue, output, and color temperature, while standing by the camera. You can also save scenes and control up to eight Hive LED lights individually or all together.

This light has the same pro-photo diameter as the rest of the C series Hive family, so you can use all their accessories and optics. You can also put it into all the available optics from Hive, including the 200-C reflector, 100-C reflector, Fresnel, all the mini source 4 adaptors, and even the full source 4 adapter. There will be a set of small clip-on Fresnels available as a three lens set (spot, medium, and wide). These are acrylic, lightweight, and durable for a low cost of $100. You can also put the light on a small softbox with a small speed ring. There are four 1/4 20 mounting points on the back, plus one on the side, which allows you to mount it to any grip gear, camera, or drone.

Check out the video above to learn more and see this light, available in June 2019, in action.
