Motion Impossible has just announced the new MagTrax drive-end upgrade for their AGITO robotic camera dolly. The MagTrax guidance system enhances existing AGITO Sports drive-ends, enabling operators to follow a magnetic strip laid on a surface, underneath a carpet, or embedded within a set. The magnetic strip can be arranged in various creative ways that are not possible with conventional dolly track.

Recently, I talked by phone with Ari Robbins, a well-known Steadicam operator. He shared insights about his career, incorporating new tools, and how ARRI’s TRINITY and MAXIMA inspire him to innovate new techniques that allow him to achieve the Director and DPs' vision.

Andrew Theiss is a Steadicam Operator based out of Columbus, Ohio. After deciding on this career path, he purchased an ARRI TRINITY 5-Axis Hybrid Stabilizer. Recently, he talked to us about why he chose the TRINITY and how he’s been putting it to good use.

As one of our Steadicam instructors here at AbelCine, and a Steadicam Operator myself, a visit to the Tiffen booth was at the top of my list for NAB 2019. While there, I spoke with Tyson Galland about the new Steadimate-S, which allows Steadicam operators to step into the brave new world of 3-axis brushless gimbals by using them in conjunction with the familiar vests and arms we know from the SteadiOp world.

In this video, I set out to experiment with different ways of moving the camera in order to see how each compare in a single scene. We shot a scene with a dancer in four different ways: on a tripod, on a slider, handheld, and on a gimbal (the MōVI Pro). What I discovered was that the different methods give very different effects and there's a place for them all, as long as you understand the relative strengths and weaknesses of each.
