It is now common for digital cinema cameras to record a RAW file as well as a proxy. Proxy recordings can be loaded to a laptop and then into NLE programs, which is a quick and easy way for production to check on composition and performance. Additionally, proxies can be used to select takes and string out an edit. This streamlines the post process as only selected takes are color corrected.

The Canon C200 is a compact camcorder that utilizes the same basic sensor as their flagship Super35 digital cinema camera, the C700. One of the C200's most striking features is the ability to record 4K RAW files in Canon's new Cinema RAW Light format to an internal CFast card. Cinema RAW Light is a lightly compressed RAW video format that maximizes recording time while giving up very little file quality in comparison to "full fat" RAW.

Sony recently announced the AXS-R7 recorder for their F5 and F55 cameras. The new AXS-R7 is a robust dual-slot RAW recorder that enables recording up to 120 fps in 4K on the F55.

Today I stopped by the Atomos booth to speak with Jeromy Young about their recently-announced Shogun and Ninja Flame recorders. As we mentioned in our previous TechByte, both these models feature the AtomHDR engine, but the Shogun Flame will accept SDI, RAW and HDMI signals, while the Ninja Flame will accept HDMI signals.

Sony's enormously flexible PXW-FS7 has been shipping for about eight months now and is very well received at many different levels of the market. With its two shooting modes -- Custom and CINE-EI -- this camera is well suited to a wide variety of productions and applications.
