Miro High-Speed Inspiration Challenge

Vision Research's Phantom Miro M320S is truly a groundbreaking high-speed camera that boasts HD high-speed up to 1540 frames per second, excellent low light performance, a small form factor and lightweight camera body. With these tools at your disposal, where will your imagination take you?

AbelCine and Vision Research challenge you to create a piece of work that showcases the camera's unique capabilities. Four finalists will be selected to receive training and one week with a complete Miro M320S package to put their ideas into motion.

To further inspire you, one Grand Prize Winner will be awarded a brand new Phantom Miro M320S package courtesy of Vision Research. Additional prizes, consisting of AbelCine rental certificates with a combined value of over $10,000, will be awarded to the 2nd place winner and runners-up

Phantom Miro High-Speed Inspiration Challenge

Submissions & Selection Process

One of the unique aspects of the Miro is that opens up new realms for high-speed photography. In view of this, there are no restrictions on the format or genre of the project, but it must be shot entirely on the Miro and include high-speed footage.

Imagine the possibilities! We are looking for creative applications of high-speed that are enabled by the Miro's capabilities. Proposals for Miro projects will be judged on their creativity, unique use of ultra high-speed and relevance to the distinctive features of the camera.

The goal is to create high-speed imagery we haven't seen before (balloon pops need not apply). This challenge is open to image-makers and artists from all disciplines, and we strongly encourage new and aspiring content producers to submit their ideas.

Applications must be submitted by September 16, 2012 using our online form, which also has complete details on the submission package.

Completed projects should be 3-6 minutes in length, and shot entirely on the Miro; however, the entire piece does not need to be in high-speed.

A selection committee, comprised of AbelCine and Vision Research experts, will select finalists based on the originality of the concept and the suitability of the technology to the project. The completeness and quality of all key application elements will be considered, as well as the committee's confidence that the applicant(s) will be able to complete the project as proposed.

Awards Package

The four applicants selected for a grant will be notified by October 9, 2012. Each finalist will receive:

  • Training by AbelCine Camera Specialists
  • Use of a complete Miro M320S package for one week. The package, as awarded, will consist of:
    • Phantom Miro M320S Camera in PL, EOS or F lens mount
    • Choice of at least two lenses (subject to need & availability)
    • Phantom CineFlash Reader/Dock
    • CineFlash memory modules (subject to availability)
    • PCU Control Unit
    • Electronic Viewfinder
    • Power supplies, cables and incidental accessories
    • Additional accessories will be available at a discounted rate
  • Technical support for data off-load (Post-production must be arranged by the production team)
  • Promotion of their work on a dedicated portal and through AbelCine & Vision Research's social media channels

Finalists will be expected to provide updates (photo, video and text) during the production process, which will be used for promotional purposes. Completed projects must be submitted by February 1, 2013, along with a written description of the production process and workflow used.

A panel comprised of the selection committee and industry experts will choose one Grand Prize winner from among the finalists. The Grand Prize winner, announced on March 1, 2013, will receive a brand new Miro M320S camera package, courtesy of Vision Research.

A Second Place winner will receive a certificate valued at $7,500 towards the rental of any Phantom camera package from AbelCine. Two runners-up will each receive AbelCine rental certificates valued at $1,500.

All finalists' projects will be screened at a high-profile industry event, to be announced at a later date.
