The ikan EC1 Beholder 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal Stabilizer with encoders is designed for use with DSLR or mirrorless cameras weighing under 4.5 lb. It is lightweight and easy-to-use, can be carried in your small camera bag or in the provided travel case. Some cameras you may already have which would fit this handheld gimbal, include: Sony a7SII, Panasonic GH4, Canon 5D Mark III, and many more.

The EC1 gimbal works well with fast-paced action sequences, aiming low or high-angle shots, or walking beside/behind/in front of your subject due to its rotating, brushless motors with a limitless range of motion. This 3-axis gimbal with 360° rotation on each axis helps you correct shaking or swaying. It will balance and smoother the picture your capture to achieve professional image stabilization. It also features an adaptive PID-algorithm for preventing vibrations in wide angle shots and an ACC low-pass filter to improve stability as well.

Camera Modes

This ikan EC1 Beholder uses a 32-bit electronic board system with several profiles for multiple shooting modes. You can toggle between these modes by simply pressing a key. Here are the (4) camera modes:

  • Lock Mode - camera will hold the direction and not follow, pan, or tilt. This means that the camera's compensation will stay the same; no mattery how you move the handle below it, the camera stays level with the horizon.
  • Pan-Follow Mode - gimbal follows pan and holds the tilt position
  • Follow Mode - camera follows the tilt and pan directions
  • Full Follow Mode - gimbal will follow, roll, pitch, and pan

Expanded Functionality

Beholder EC1 is ready to use when you take it out of the box. It does not require software changes in order to handle your specific camera. Please be sure to follow the instructions in the product manual to balance your gimbal with the camera before use. Due to its redesigned quick-release baseplate system, the EC1 is easy to balance without the need of tools.

Slip ring technology allows your camera, while mounted on the EC1, to rotate 360° on all axes. This version removes rotation blockers used in previous versions to prevent wire twisting.

The EC1 also increases the precision of stabilization by applying FOC-specific compensations. In addition, it prevents motors from losing synchronization and skipping steps.

Point and Lock

Quickly lock your camera into any position by manually pointing and holding it in any direction. After a few seconds, the camera will lock and hold its position until it is reset back to default.

Auto Inversion

Switch to Inverted Mode at any time by simply flipping the handle over the camera. Inverted Mode can be operated in conjunction with any of the Lock and Follow Modes.

Wireless Capability

It also supports remote control via wire or wireless connection. This will help you achieve high-angle or low-angle shots, boom moves, dolly shots, or a smooth and seamless transition from high to low during time-lapse photography. Be sure to check out any firmware upgrades by the manufacturer so you can unlock the latest sofware optimization.

NOTE: A Bluetooth module for remote control is not included. A 2.4g wireless joystick module can be used for remote control, but is not inluded with this purchase.

Follow Modes

The EC1 features 3 different follow modes.

  • Yaw-Axis Follow Mode - only follows your Pan movements
  • Pitch & Yaw-Axis Follow Mode - follows both Pan and Tilt movements
  • 3-Axis Follow Mode - full control of the gimbal, allowing you to Pan, Tilt, and Roll

Mount Points

Mount accessories using the (2) 1/4-20 mount points provided on the EC1. These are ideally situated for your microphone or on-board monitor/recorder. (1) 3/8-16 thread is provided on the bottom of the handheld grip to secure your EC1 gimbal to a tripod, jib or other support.

The manufacturer mentions that the quick-release plate is compatible with an optional Manfrotto 577 Monopod.

OLED Status Display & UI

The back of the handle features a convenient OLED status display to provide you feedback on battery life and operating modes currently in use. Use this as a quick reference while shooting or to select and change modes.

A 4-way joystick interface and buttons allow user input.

There are also sound alert options for mode change and calibration adjustments.

Power & Batteries

The battery-operated EC1 offers a battery operation time of up to 20 hours of standby time and approximately 8-10 hours operating time. It comes with (3) 3.7V mAh detachable rechargeable Li-ion batteries.
