Overview
The Canon EOS C100 Mark II Camera improves upon its predecessor with added functionality. It is optimized for single shooters and compatible with the CN-E cinema lenses (Canon EF, EF-S, and EF-Mount). Canon added the DIGIC DV 4 Image Processor. The dual codec capability of the C100 MKII provides simultaneous AVCHD and MP4 recording, plus 59.95P capture and slow or fast motion recording. It also includes a Dual Pixel CMOS AF and Face Autofocus and built-in Canon Log LUTs. They even redesigned the 3.5-inch OLED panel which rotates 270 degrees. The EVF tilts and features a larger size eyecup.
This kit adds to the camera body with an EF mount 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens. The easy-to-use and durable 24-105mm f/4 zoom lens features 18 elements in 13 groups and a 77mm filter size. Canon’s Image Stabilizer Technology steadies camera shakes up to 3 stops. This zoom lens includes 3 aspherical lenses and one Super-UD glass element. Canon designed it to minimize chromatic aberration and distortion, even at wide apertures. The ring-type USM delivers a silent yet quick AF. Of course, like all Canon lenses, this one resists dust and moisture.
The C100 Mark II is ideal for run-and-gun shooters or webcasting. Since it does not record 4K you will change out your memory cards and batteries less often. The compact size will help you pack the C100 and a lens in a backpack, carry-on baggage, or specially padded camera bag for fast setup at multiple locations.
Sensor & Recording
The Super 35mm Canon CMOS image sensor matches the sensor in other Canon EOS family cameras. The 8.3 megapixel sensor deploys two photodiodes to ensure high speed removal of accumulated charge to elevate the effective dynamic range. The four 1920x1080 HD video components (Red, Green, Green-Blue, and Blue) pre-process the image before sending it for advanced processing to the DIGIC DV 4 processor. The resulting components are sent to the AVCHD and MP4 codecs. The camera yields a maximum ISO speed of 102,400 and a wide dynamic range with up to 12 stops.
The AVCHD enables a 59.94p frame rate up to 28 Mbps (1920x1808 HD video) while the MP4 recording format delivers 35 Mbps. The professional AVCHD standard permits long recording of full HD in what Canon names a “smooth look” while the MP4 is desirable for webcast and social media publication. You can record either format or use the dual SD card slots in the Canon C100 MK II to record both formats simultaneously.
Record slow or fast motion effects when using the MP4 format. Your speeds can range from x0.4 to x2.5. View the handy graph in photos to compare recording frame rates in NTSC or PAL.
NOTE: Sound is not recorded. This feature functions in single-slot recording only.
Webcasters and YouTube content creators seeking small file sizes will appreciate the speed and convenience of C100 MK II’s MP4 conversion feature. Place an SD card in the Canon EOS C100 MK II camera’s main slot with an AVCHD or a MP4 recording. The C100 MK II can then convert that into a 3 Mbps (640x360) MP4 file on an SD card inserted into the secondary slot.
Autofocus
Dual Pixel Autofocus features not only a continuous AF setting, but also a lock setting. The lock permits you to change framing and retain focus. Of course, any AF type of functionality suits a single shooter following a moving subject or any fluid documentary-style setting.
NOTE: Dual Pixel CMOS AF will function in the center of the frame. Canon’s documentation also reminds you that it is also compatible with more than 100 Canon EF lenses.
The aptly named Face AF Mode will detect and then focus upon a human face. That way you can concentrate on composition and style.
OLED Display
Canon redesigned their OLED display. Its sturdy, hinged ability helps you stow the screen away when not in use such as with a viewfinder. The 3.5-inch 1.23 megapixel OLED display delivers the vivid colors and high contrast you’ve come to expect in an Organic Light-Emitting Diode display. When deployed, the flip-out screen opens 180-degrees to uncover both function keys and a joystick for the display menu. The easy-to-use interface enables fast changes in settings like aperture, shutter speed, ISO, ND, or white balance. The hinge allows for an additional setting where the OLED rests at 270-degrees against the side of the C100 MK II. This setting suits on-location live monitoring.
NOTE: Unless it has been fixed since this posting, you may need to use the EVF to view waveform instead of the display.
Color & Special Features
Utilize the built-in Canon Log LUT to produce color grading inside the C100 MK II.
Wirelessly transfer your video files and still images to a selected FTP server. This is ideal for news broadcasters as well as for backing-up files. It uses the 5GHz band and can transfer up to 100 files at a time.
Canon designed the EOS C100 MK II to include three start/stop record buttons. You will locate them on the front of the camera, on the removable pistol grip, plus the detachable top handle. You cannot miss them as they are bright red.
The ergonomic redesign of the C100 Mark II delivers indentations around control buttons, a comfortable pistol grip, and a recessed power switch to prevent accidental loss of power.
Create, save, and recall custom picture settings, camera functions, and display options on the C100 Mark II. It also features a screw-locking HDMI out with SMPTE time code for attaching recorders or camera monitors.
The removable top handle integrates a built-in tally light, stereo microphone, dual XLR audio inputs for stereo recording, plus a mic mount. You may wish to secure other audio components or accessories to the detachable top handle. Phantom power supply connected to the XLR inputs will assist you with powering additional accessories.
The Canon C100 MK II pairs well with the Zacuto Z-finder and host of other third-party accessories.
Remote control of the camera is also enabled via a compatible smartphone, tablet, or laptop.
