Mic Pre's

The F8 features an extremely low noise floor (−127 dBu EIN) and high gain (up to 75 dB), with +4 dB line inputs. ZOOM states the F8 is outfitted with their finest mic preamps to date.

High-Resolution Audio & Advanced Limiters

The F8 can record at 24-bit/192 kHz resolution and is equipped with onboard limiters designed to provide overload protection. Limiting can be applied to all (8) channels simultaneously at full resolution, with 10 dB of headroom and controls for setting threshold, attack, and release. 

Timecode with Pinpoint Accuracy

The F8's time code is state-of-the-art. It utilizes a Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillator (TCXO) that generates time code at 0.2 ppm accuracy, enabling rock-solid syncing of audio and video.

The F8 supports all standard dropframe and non-drop formats, and can jam sync to time code being provided by external devices. An input and output are provided on standard BNC connectors, enabling easy integration into any rig.

Recording

File Formats, Sampling & Sample Rates - The F8 records in BWF-compatible WAV format at 16 or 24-bit resolution, and at any standard sample rate up to 192 kHz. When recording files in MP3 format, you can choose bit rates of 128, 192, or 320 kbps.

Dual SD Card Recording - Record on (2) SD/SDHC/SDXC cards, up to 512 GB each, simultaneously. This allows you to backup or split recordings (for example, save 8 tracks onto 1 card and a stereo mix onto another). ZOOM lists compatible SD cards for their F8.

Dual-Channel Recording - The F8's dual-channel recording mode allows you to create safety tracks on inputs 1-4, each with independent level, limiting, delay, phase inversion, and high-pass filtering 

Pre-Record - The pre-record function allows you to capture up to 6 seconds of audio before you hit the RECORD button.

File Protection - Files are saved periodically during recording. This provides an extra level of protection in the event of unexpected file interruption, for example, power loss or the removal of an SD card.

On-Board Mixer

The F8's onboard mixer enables flexible signal routing from all inputs to all outputs, either pre- or post-fader, with user-adjustable level, pan, and input/output delay. In addition to advanced onboard limiters (which can be applied to all channels and tracks simultaneously), the F8 also provides high-pass filtering to reduce the sound of wind and other noise, plus phase inversion and Mid-Side decoding.

Weight & Build

The F8 is not only versatile and feature rich, it is the smallest field recorder with eight XLR combo preamps ever made. Weighing just 2.1 pounds (without batteries), its aluminum chassis is both rugged and durable.

Display

Sound professionals sometimes work in dusty, hard-to-see environments. Level meters with adjustable brightness and its 2.4" full-color backlit LCD (which can be set to monochrome mode), make the F8 easy-to-use in any environment — from low-light to direct sunlight. 

(3) Power Sources

A 4-pin Hirose connector allows the use of external 9-16 volt DC battery packs.

Internal power is provided by 8x AA batteries. The F8 can switch power sources from a DC battery pack to the AA batteries at a user-defined voltage level for uninterrupted recording.

You can also use the supplied 12 volt AC adapter, when not on the go.

Comprehensive Headphone Monitoring

In the field, it's important to be able to quickly check levels as you're recording. With the F8, it's simple. A single display lets you monitor single or multiple tracks, as well as any of the Main or Sub outputs, via a dedicated 1/4" headphone jack with a front panel volume control.

Signals can be freely routed to the left and/or right headphone channels, pre- or post-fader, and the headphone output can be switched to mono. You can set headphone alert tones for low battery, recording start/stop, or recording errors.

The F8 comes equipped with a built-in 100 mW headphone amplifier, allowing you to monitor in the noisiest of environments.

Wireless Bluetooth Control & the ZOOM F8 Control App

The F8 is the first field recorder to come with wireless Bluetooth control. The ZOOM F8 Control App for iOS provides extensive wireless remote control of the F8 from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch (5th Gen) using Bluetooth LE protocol. Functions include Record, Play, Stop, Fast-Forward, and Rewind, plus mixer pan and fader level. You can also monitor input levels, current time code, and battery status. With ZOOM F8 Control, you can rename files, enter metadata, and set date/time information directly from your iOS device.

I/O Connectors

Inputs

The F8 provides 8 discrete inputs with locking Neutrik XLR/TRS combo connectors. Each preamp has a dedicated gain control knob, a 6-segment LED level meter, and Record Ready and PFL switch. A 10-pin connector on the rear panel enables the use of Zoom mic capsules, with an optional extension cable that allows for remote positioning. There's also a built-in slate mic and a variable frequency slate tone generator to confirm levels.

Outputs

In addition to its 1/4" headphone jack with dedicated volume control, the F8 provides (2) outputs:

  • 2x Main Outs (on balanced TA3 mini-XLR jacks) for connection to external mixers and processing devices
  • 2x Sub Outs (on a single unbalanced ⅛" stereo mini-jack) for connection to a camera

Timecode

Timecode I/O is provided on BNC connectors.

USB

A USB port enables firmware updates, file transfer, and allows the F8 to be used as an 8-in/4-out USB audio interface operating at sample rates up to 96 kHz.

Software

The F8's menu is easy to navigate and has a simple file structure. Cataloging is straightforward, with extensive metadata (both BEXT and iXML), which can be entered directly on the F8 or with the Zoom F8 Control App.

 

 

Sennheiser Ambeo Virtual Reality (VR) Microphone

The Sennheiser Ambeo Virtual Reality (VR) Microphone adds sound to your virtual reality video / spherical 360° content. This easy-to-use ambisonic microphone features four matched KE 14 capsules in a tetrahedral arrangement. Ambisonics is a multi-channel technique which means you can capture the audio surrounding a single point, in this case wherever you place the Ambeo VR microphone.

Playback representation of ambisonics is rendered binaurally so you can virtually rotate the orientation of the perspective both horizontally and vertically. All the post playback tools support this technique. In addition Sennheiser, via theVR Creators Program, involved industry professionals while developing the Ambeo VR Microphone.

Sennheiser also developed A-B encoder software which functions as a plug-in. The Ambeo VR Microphone delivers A-format which is a raw 4-channel output which you can convert into a new set of 4-channel known as the Ambisonics B-format. B-format is a W, X, Y, Z representation of the sound field around the microphone where W equals the sum of all 4 capsules. X, Y, and Z represent the bi-directional microphone patters as front/back, left/right, and up/down, respectively. In this fashion, you can audition Ambisonics B in playback.

The plugin which you can download for free is available for both MAC and Windows for VST, AU, and AAX format.

 

 

Rycote's InVision INV 7HG MKIII Microphone Shockmount

Rycote's InVision INV 7HG MKIII Microphone Shockmount is designed for discreet, low-profile on-camera use in broadcast studio environments where windshielding is not required. This mount features Rycote's latest Lyre suspension systems to offer broadcast professionals the cleanest possible sound, free from unwanted cable or stand-borne noise. Use your INV 7HG MKIII Shockmount with microphones mounted on desks, stands or boom poles, or suspended mics.

Use this mic shockmount on your C-Stand or boom pole. You can mount it with the provided 3/8" threaded base on the Shockmount or use the included 5/8" threaded adapter for audio stand or boom mount positions.

This will fit your Sennheiser MKH416 or MKH60 microphones and other, heavy mics.

Rycote 25mm BBG Windshield

The Rycote 25mm BBG Windshield is designed to offer the wind attenuation properties of a full-sized windshield in a much smaller package, easily slipping onto the body of your microphone. This allows the microphone to be hand-held or shock-mounted with a Lyre suspension. Ideal for short microphones, the BBG Windshield is suitable for low-profile boom applications as well as for use in hand-held operations and interviews. It is widely used for microphones with bulbous ends and ORTF microphone pairs, where the maximum head diameter is 80mm.

The windshield is constructed of the same material as the full size, modular windshields, but rather than clipping to a microphone suspension the Windshield is mounted directly on the microphone by a grommet gripping the microphone body. The microphone is pushed through the grommet, completely enclosing the microphone capsule. The Windshield consists of two halves, which can be separated to fit microphones with a ball-head or tapered body from within the windshield.

NOTE: For additional wind protection, a furry Windjammer cover is available (sold separately).

Rycote BBG Windjammer

The Rycote BBG Windjammer, first introduced by Rycote in 1987, is a high quality synthetic fur-cover, which provides the highest possible protection against extreme wind-noise. When using a Windjammer fitted over a Windshield, up to 50 dB of wind-noise attenuation can be achieved, producing excellent standard audio recordings.

The Windjammer is made from materials which are specially designed and manufactured for the purpose, and as a result has virtually no adverse effect on High-Frequency. To be totally effective it is important that the pile of the Windjammer remains in prime condition, so each is supplied with a fold flat hairbrush for ongoing maintenance.

This Windjammer is compatible with 100mm BBG Windshields.
