Rack-mounted PIX 270i is a file-based video deck that delivers the performance, quality, and reliability required for fast-paced studio, live sports, event, and mobile multi-camera productions. It offers frame rate conversion and is a hardware scaler.
Key Highlights
  • Group multiple PIX 270i together
  • Accepts HDMI, HD-SDI & select 3G-SDI
  • 10-Bit Up/Down/Cross-Conversion

The rack-mounted Sound Devices PIX 270i Video Recorder and Player offers extensive network connectivity and multi-unit synchronization support by grouping multiple PIX recorders in the unite over Ethernet to achieve simultaneous, frame-accurate multicam recording and playback. The PIX 270i can group with other PIX 270i recorders, as well as PIX 260i, with all of the recorders functioning as a single system. The grouped recorders can controlled two ways: directly through the PIX hardware interface or via a browser accessing the embedded the built-in web-based control panel.

The PIX 270i accepts video input signals over HDMI, HD-SDI, and single link 3G-SDI Level A and B. It does not accept analog video signals, though it will accept analog audio. As both HDMI and SDI Outputs are active simultaneously, conversion from SDI to HDMI and HDMI to SDI is possible. It delivers 10-bit video up/down/cross-conversion.

The PIX 270i records and plays Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD Quicktime video files through its 12-bit 4:4:4 3G-SDI at data rates from 330 Mb/s (Apple ProRes 4444) down to 36 Mb/s (Pro- Res and DNxHD proxy files). Files recorded on a PIX 270i can be directly imported by optional leading editing systems including Avid Media Composer, Apple Final Cut Pro, and Adobe Premiere Pro. Plus, Quicktime files made in an editing system are ready for playback on the PIX 270i.

Up to (4) SSD drives can connect to the PIX 270i: (2) in the drive bays behind the front panel and (2) attached via eSATA. The PIX 270i can record to the (4) drives simultaneously for redundancy or sequentially for long form recording. Optional PIX SSD drives and files are also accessible over Ethernet as network-attached SMB volumes. In addition to browser-based control, the PIX 270i can be controlled by external RS-422 (Sony 9-pin compatible). Machine transport and setup menu selections are fully controllable.

Frame Rate Converter & Scaler

Like the PIX 250i, the PIX 270i features a powerful hardware scaler and frame rate converter. Up, down, cross-conversion and pulldown removal give users the ability to record files in a customer-requested rate, even rates not supported by the camera. The camera-mount PIX 240i video recorder also supports aspect ratio conversion, HD to SD and SD to HD.

User Interface

The PIX 270i includes a precision 5" 800 x 480-pixel IPS display for menu access and video monitoring. The highly accurate display provides peaking, false color, and zoom features to facilitate framing, exposure, and focus evaluation.

The front panel includes a Control Knob, File Buttons, Audio Button, Menu Button, Fast Forward, Rewind, REC button, Play and Stop buttons, plus a Headphone Volume Knob and USB Keyboard input port (to navigate and control the PIX 270i or to enter meta data). There is also a handle grip point to tilt the LCD to a better viewing angle in your Rack. A convenient 1/4" Headphone Jack is provided for audio playback purposes with 8 to 100 ohms.

Timecode Generator

Using a timecode generator ensures accurate sync in multi-camera and double-system sound applications. The on-board high-accuracy Ambient timecode generator makes the PIX 270i right at home on any production from simple single camera shoots, to complex multi-camera sync-sound productions. All common timecode frame rates and modes are supported.

In addition to generating ultra-stable time code, the PIX 270i reads time code embedded in SDI and HDMI streams, and from external sources. The high-quality hardware scaler and converter in the PIX 270i powers real-time up, down, or cross-conversion during ingest. It converts between all supported SD and HD resolutions and frame rates, and includes 3:2 pull-down removal.

Extensive Video I/O

The video input on the PIX 270i has extensive compatibility with a wide range of cameras. It's BNC input accepts 12-bit 3G SDI (4:4:4 RGB or YCbCr), HD-SDI, SDI. Its HDMI input accepts high-definition and standard-definition video.

With its 3G-SDI 4:4:4 input, recording to ProRes 4444 offers recordings that are perceptually indistinguishable from the original source material.

Frame-Synched Recording and Playback of Grouped PIX 270i Units

Grouping multiple PIX 270i recorders together offers frame accurate multi-source recording and playback, as if operating as a single device. Ideal for live event, video walls, production trucks, houses of worship, and more. Units can be daisy chained together or connected via an optional, common Ethernet switcher.

To ensure frame-accurate recordings, it is recommended by the manufacturer to feed house reference sync and linear timecode to each PIX 270i via distribution app. Please ensure that all drives have been properly formatted and named to keep each unit distinct. Once named, assign each PIX 270i to the same Network Group. Remember to allow the units time to configure once a change has been made to a Group, such as a new unit added to the Group.

Once complete, the units will function as a single device. That means setting changes will ripple through the other units in the group, so you only need to make the change once to take effect on all the units in your daisy chain. Decide on a file name format for the group recordings to identify multi-camera configurations belonging to the same recording. Add a Reel Name to identify the folder where your recorded files are stored.

After this is done, you can establish any other Group parameters. Refer to the product manual for additional details.

Time Saving Efficiency

  • Tapeless file-based recording, playback, and file transfer
  • Access and transfer files over Ethernet
  • Edit-ready Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD files
  • Recording on up to four drives provides immediate file copies and back up, as well as long-form recording
