Overview
This RED SCARLET-W BRAIN camera powered by a RED DRAGON Super 35mm CMOS Sensor with 16.5+ stops of dynamic range includes a Standard OLPF balanced for both light and dark situations. It produces cinema-quality images rich with natural color. The RED SCARLET-W camera features interchangeable lens mounts, 13.8 megapixels of resolution, 3D LUTs, and can simultaneously record REDCODE RAW and 2K ProRes. It also captures Avid DNxR/HD.
DRAGON Sensor
The RED DRAGON sensor inside the SCARLET-W BRAIN delivers a high dynamic range and natural color. SCARLET-W records 5K 2:4:1 at up to 60fps, 5K FF 17:9 at up to 50fps, 4K 2:4:1 at up to 150fps, and 2K 2:4:1 at up to 300fps with REDCODE RAW.
The default recording frame rate is 23.98fps. To increase that you need to set the Project Time Base (the rate at which footage is played back) to the appropriate setting. If you are seeking timecode you will require a DSMC2 expander and an external device to process it.
Recording & Workflow
RED states it remains committed to a seamless workflow. The SCARLET-W features REDCODE RAW recording format (also known as R3D). This is compatible with most professional editing programs. You can capture in R3D and Avid DNxHD or Apple ProRes file formats. R3D is formatted as a pixel-defect corrected 16-bit per pixel RAW data frame. Although this formatting does occur, RED states that all other aspects of the digital image remain unprocessed.
One of the advantages of RAW data is that the file is recorded separately from RGB color processing, including ISO, white balance, and other RGB color space settings. The DRAGON sensor saves color parameters as meta data which provides the user with more flexibility. You can either adjust RGB processing in the field or wait until post production, without affecting the recorded RAW data image quality.
REDCODE is a compression codec which is a visually lossless and wavelet-based. The compression reduces file size, of course, which grants you longer recording times on your RED MINI-MAG.
BRAIN Style
The modular and rugged body style of the SCARLET-W BRAIN is similar to the other DSMC2 cameras and it features integrated mounting points for expansion by adding accessories. It is made of lightweight aluminum alloy and is compact in size, though not as small as the RED RAVEN. Due to its compact form, the SCARLET-W is suitable for small shoulder rigs, gimbals, and in some cases even aerial applications. It is more versatile than the RAVEN due to both interchangeable lens mounts and the included Standard OLPF. The BRAIN with Integrated Media Bay weighs a mere 3.5lbs.
Despite its small size, the SCARLET-W is not limited to small rigs and gimbals. It can also be configured in a studio capacity. Expand your camera body by using the Base I/O V-Lock package (sold separately or with the SCARLET-W BRAIN as a package).
Standard OLPF
The RED Standard OLPF (optical low-pass filter) included with this SCARLET-W delivers optimal colorimetry, IR protection, and optical glare reduction under a wide variety of light conditions. In other words, it is balanced for both dim and bright environments. Each OLPF includes a protective case for shipping and storage.Â
Audio
The SCARLET-W includes two integrated, dual-channel, digital stereo microphones to record uncompressed audio at 24-bit 48 kHz. You can use these for your scratch track. If you add an expander you can use the built-in headphone jack to listen to audio during playback. You can also add microphones and other accessories to increase your sound options with an expander. Audio data is synchronized with video and timecode embedded in the R3D file.
Accessories
The SCARLET-W is compatible with all DSMC2 accessories. Some accessories or peripheral attachments which pair with the SCARLET-W include cable-free interaction, such as the DSMC2 RED Touch 4.7" LCD Monitor. You can even use the DSMC2 LEMO Adapter B to mount the display away from the camera Brain.
The SCARLET-W includes the following monitor outputs:
- EVF/LCD – This output supports either a RED EVF (Viewfinder) or an LCD display
- HD-SDI (when using some DSMC2 expanders) – Offers 720p or 1080p to either monitor or record on an external VTR or DDR device. Configure it either for two encoded data options: 10-bit LIN (Video) or 10-bit LOG (Film).
- HDMI (when using some DSMC2 expanders) – Provides 480p, 720p, or 1080p output to monitor with a Windows monitor or HDTV.
RED offers a Monochrome camera option which provides the ability to shoot in black and white with enhanced resolution and light sensitivity.
RED also offers a three pack of OLPFs which includes the Standard OLPF, a Skin Tone-Highlight OLPF, and a Low Light Optimized OLPF.
