Canon EOS C300 Mark II Digital Cinema Camera

The improved Canon EOS C300 Mark II Digital Cinema Camera with EF lens mount features a dynamic range of 15 stops, CFast recording technology, 4K/2K/Full HD internal and external recording with 4K RAW output, plus a new 10-bit Canon Log 2 Gamma. Canon also improved the Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus along with an innovative focus assist engineering. This camera was remodeled with user input to enhance the user experience of studio motion picture applications, broadcast, indie productions, sports, and many more.

The Sensor

The redesigned camera boasts an 8.85 Megapixel Canon Super 35mm 16:9 CMOS image sensor. It supports up to 4K DCI recording with a maximum resolution of 4096x2160 pixels. Data from the 4K sensor, working with its dual Canon DIGIC DV5 image processors, delivers Over-Sampling HD Processing for reduced-moiré 2K (DCI)/Full 1080-60p HD recording and Dual-Pixel CMOS Autofocus.

The dual DIGIC DV5 image processors also help to reduce visual noise and enable high-sensitivity shooting at a maximum speed of ISO 102,400 (+54dB) for sharp, clear image capture using only ambient lighting. The EOS C300 Mark II camera also incorporates a trio of XF-AVC H.264 codecs to enable in-camera 4K (DCI) recording to dual CFast card slots and 2K/Full HD recording to an SD card slot. For external recording and monitoring, twin 3G-SDI outputs capable of 4K RAW output are included on the rear of the camera body. You can choose among multiple recording modes, resolutions, and frame rates to meet your individual production needs.

Each pixel in this CMOS imaging sensor also maintains a wide pixel pitch to maximize the amount of light which falls on each photo site. This enhances the sensitivity while also minimizing noise. It also supports ISO speeds of up to 102,400 for low-light imaging. This sensor reduces data-readout time to about half of what it was in the original EOS C300 Camera, which results in a significant reduction in rolling-shutter artifacts.

Autofocus

The Autofocus now includes an expanded focusing area and Face Detection when used in combination with Canon EF lenses. Each pixel in the camera's CMOS sensor is configured with two photodiodes. Two independent image signals can be detected at each photosite. By implementing phase-difference AF, smooth focusing is accomplished using Canon EF lenses with much higher speed and accuracy than was possible with previous technologies.

Canon expanded the DAF focusing area to approximately 80% (vertically) x 80% (horizontally). You can move the focus area using the convenient 4-direction key to provide you with a more manual control over Autofocus operation. This only functions when the Guide Area is within the Dual Pixel CMOS AF Range.

Face Detection AF on Canon EF lenses will recognize a face, focus on it, then follow that face when it moves.

One innovative feature of the enhanced AF allows you to confirm if you are focused in front of or behind the subject through visual observation. In this manner, quick and accurate manual focus can be achieved.

Lenses

The C300 Mark II is compatible with the full range of 100 Canon EF and EF-S photographic lenses, including specialty tilt-shift and fisheye models, plus Canon CN-E Cinema prime and zoom lenses, including the ENG-style Canon CINE-SERVO zooms. New Dual-Pixel CMOS AF capabilities of the EOS C300 Mark II are enabled by the AF motors in Canon EF lenses. The improved EF lens communication capabilities of the EOS C300 Mark II camera allow for the display of CN-E Cinema lens T-values, lens metadata acquisition, and chromatic aberration correction on the camera's LCD Monitor/EVF/Output display.

Improvements

The Canon EOS C300 Mark II Digital Cinema Camera facilitates operation and creative freedoms, such as full manual control, an Ultra-High Resolution 1.77 Megapixel color OLED EVF with adjustable 60° tilting angle, a built in internal mono reference microphone, a removable hand grip, an improved camera handle extension with additional attachment points, plus both a removable LCD Monitor and a control panel with XLR inputs. The modular design of the EOS C300 Mark II camera accommodates many third-party accessories.

A new log gamma designated as Canon Log Gamma 2 was designed explicitly for the camera's 10-bit recording capabilities. The files produced using Log format are ideal for color correction and grading in post-production. Canon did this to produce a high level of creative freedom while minimizing degradation of image quality. When using Canon Log 2, the Cinema EOS C300 Mark II can provide a dynamic range up to 1600%.

Be sure to check out the images where a chart on Slow and Fast Motion recording has been provided for your reference.

Recording

The Canon EOS C300 Mark II employs CFast™ (CompactFast) 2.0 cards for in-camera 4K video recording. The camera features two CFast™ card slots. Each slot is protected by a convenient hinged cover. The camera also includes an SD card slot for HD and Proxy recording. The camera can simultaneously record 4K on two CFast™ (2.0) cards along with 2K proxy images on its SD card for off-line editing. Canon provided a chart to show the memory cards verified for the EOS C300 Mark II.

Ergonomics

This camera builds on the efficient ergonomic design of the original, while adding new advantages. Redesigned to maximize shooting comfort and the usability improvements asked for by users, the EOS C300 Mark II Digital Cinema Camera's modular design allows different components to be added or removed as needed to meet both the demands of a particular shooting environment and the comfort of the camera operator. In addition to the core body, the EOS C300 Mark II Digital Cinema Camera comes with a removable hand grip, improved low-angle camera handle extension with additional attachment points, and removable LCD monitor and control panel with XLR audio inputs.

Ultra-High Resolution OLED EVF

The EOS C300 Mark II Digital Cinema Camera features a 0.46 Inch 1.77 Megapixel color OLED EVF (Organic Light Emitting Diode Electronic ViewFinder). OLED technology increases the color reproducibility, contrast and response of the viewfinder, making camera operation and the judging of image characteristics seen in the viewfinder much easier. The EVF also offers 60º of tilt for more comfortable operation in a variety of positions.

Connectivity & Control

The C300 MK II arrives equipped with (2) 3G-SDI, a gunlock input, a timecode input/output, and an HDMI output. It also includes a remote terminal, a standard headphone jack, and both an audio and a video terminal to connect exclusively to a monitor.

The camera supports the Canon RC-V100 remote controller (sold separately) to enable adjustments to camera controls and image quality from a distance. It supports a variety of third-party LANC accessories.

You do not need a remote to achieve remove control though. Use a standard web browser on a WiFi capable device (your smart phone, laptop, tablet, etc.) to take dynamic control of your camera functionality. Canon added focus control functions. You can adjust – by touch – the focus area.

And if you prefer the manual life and wish to toss aside all this WiFi mumbo jumbo you can do that, too. The EOS C300 Mark II camera offers a fully manual yet still digital camera. You have full manual control of functions such as iris, shutter speed, gain, zoom, focus, and audio. You will also have access to Custom Picture Settings, Custom Functions, and Custom Display Options to tailor your camera to your precise needs.

Zacuto Z-C3002ER C300 Mark II EVF Recoil

The Zacuto Z-C3002ER C300 Mark II EVF Recoil is a balanced, shoulder mounted rig which includes the Zacuto VCT Pro baseplate and Grip Relocator to position camera control at a convenient handgrip. This rig is designed for optimal balance and comfort when shoulder mounted or on a tripod.

With lenses and cameras more frequently being similar in weight, the balance point is where the lens meets the camera body. With a Recoil rig, the balance point needs to be directly over your shoulder, which puts the camera behind you. This requires focus, monitoring and camera controls to be relocated forward, creating a lighter and shorter rig.

Includes:

  • VCT Pro – this baseplate has a sliding top plate for quickly removing the camera from the rig or fast len changes, a built-in, curved shoulder pad, a v-wedge tripod connector (with 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 screw option). It has removable and extendable 6.5" iris rods and rows of 1/4"-20 screw holes along the sides for accessories. It has quick release 15mm rod parts in the rear. The recessed rod mount offers maximum accessory capable space under your camera lens.
  • Grip Relocator for C100/300/500 – this articulating handgrip with rod cap incorporates a Zacuto Grip Relocator for your Canon C100/300 removable grip. It provides full articulation via lever and our exclusive right-angle cable connects to the port on your camera. Trigger on/off control, lens aperture control, waveform, 1:1 zoom, zebras and more.
  • C300 Mark II Helmet Kit – mounts directly to the top of the C300 Mark II in place of the Canon top handle. Offers multiple 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 mounting screw holes to attach a variety of accessories as well as a spot to mount the C300 Mark II microphone. Includes the Recoil Handle top grip, which accepts two coldshoe accessories and has a quick release 15mm rod port. Our handle allows you to quickly take the handle off for travelling.

Zacuto C300/500 Z-Finder with Mounting Kit

The Zacuto C300/500 Z-Finder is an optical viewfinder, specifically designed to attach to the Canon C300, C300 Mark II, and C500 cinema camera’s LCD screen. This Z-Finder will magnify the LCD screen by 1.8x and has a diopter wheel for specific focus tuning. It cuts out any extraneous light and offers an initial point of stability by pressing your eye against the large eyecup.

The Z-Finder includes 4 interchangeable anti-fog glass diopters, 0, +1, +2, and +3 so you can correct it to your vision right out of the box and then fine tune it with our red adjust wheel for perfect clarity. -1 and +4 diopters are available for purchase separately. An aluminum sun mask is built in to the Z-Finder to protect your LCD screen from sunlight.

The C300/C500 Z-Finder attaches by using a foam padded sleeve that slides over the LCD screen of the C300, C300 Mark II, or C500. The sleeve is secured into place with a bar clamp. It also includes a unique monitor lock clip to keep the LCD screen from moving forward when the Z-Finder is pressed against your eye.

The Mounting Kit for the C300/C500 Z-Finder allows you to position the LCD screen forward and off the the side in a position to better enable shoulder mounted shooting. The Mounting Kit attaches to a Z-Rail mount and will allow forward/backward, side to side, and tilt adjustment of the Z-Finder.

NOTE: This mounting kit works with the C300/C500 Helmet and handle as a unified system. The C300/C500 Helmet Kit is required to use this kit (for the C300 Mk. II, the C300 Mark II Helmet Kit is required).

When moving the LCD this far forward, you may need to purchase the Canon Extension cable, sold by Canon.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The C300/C500 Z-Finder with Mounting Kit is only compatible with the Canon C300, C300 Mark II, and C500 cameras. It is not compatible with any other camera or set up.

Compact-Servo 70-200mm T4.4 EF Mount Lens

The Compact-Servo 70-200mm T4.4 EF Mount Lens delivers full external servo control over zoom, focus, and iris. The integrated servo drive unit is compatible with broadcast industry-standard lens controllers including Canon's standard broadcast lens controllers (ZSD-300D/FPD-400D). An optional ZSG-C10 Zoom Servo Grip can mount to the lens for handheld operation.

This 70-200mm lens combines high level 4K optical performance with a compact size of only 7.2 in. in length and a weight of only 2.76lb to provide great mobility. The lightweight design and compact size allows these lenses to be used in a wide range of shooting environments and applications.

Three levels of Image Stabilization and incorporated autofocus functions set the Compact-Servo 70–200mm T4.4 EF lens apart from traditional Super 35mm Cinema lenses. A 9-blade iris creates a rounded aperture which means out-of-focus highlights appear circular. The lens also features a 2.8x zoom magnification, a focal length range of 70–200mm, and a 130º smooth rotating focus ring.

The lens is also compatible with the Canon EF 1.4x III and EF 2x III Extenders. The 70–200mm T4.4 EF lens offers professional video functionality all at an affordable price, making it ideal for a wide range of video applications including documentary, cinema, news gathering, wedding, and other video production.

The Compact-Servo 70-200mm lens fits right into your kit. The zoom range, image stabilization, and lightweight body of this lens will match your CN-E prime lenses.

4K Imagery

Sharp imagery can be produced with 4K resolution on the Compact-Servo 70-200mm.

Canon mentions how the contrast range associated with High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging helps ensure both deep black reproduction and excellent highlights. It also can enhance lens chromatic aberrations, but Canon’s optical design of the Compact-Servo lens family anticipated this in order to minimize aberrations.

Canon Compact-Servo lenses provide these features:

Parfocal Operation (precise focus through the entire zoom range) – Achieve Parfocal Operation  in both manual and autofocus modes with the Canon Compact-Servo lenses which employ a special lens group to move and maintain precise focus while a separate lens group performs the zooming action. This helps you maintain focus while zooming.

Consistent Brightness – Canon Compact-Servo lenses provide consistent brightness throughout the entire zoom range by maintaining a wide aperture of T4.4 (F4.0). In this manner, you will be able to zoom without the image dimming.

Minimized Focus Breathing – Canon Compact-Servo lens minimizes focus breathing

When you adjust focus during video capture. Focus breathing is a change in magnification of the image when adjusting focus.

Continuous Iris Control – Precise exposure control is provided by Canon’s Compact-Servo lenses due to the 9-blade iris which creates a rounded aperture. Out-of-focus highlights appear circular and the lens adjusts smoothly from open to closed. An odd number of iris blades, along with an increased blade count, can reduce distracting flares. You can also completely close the Compact-Servo irises to adjust your black balance.

Image Stabilization (IS) – Three levels of Image Stabilization are offered by Compact-Servo lenses:

  • Standard Mode for handheld operation
  • Maximum Mode for high frequency movement
  • Smooth Mode for tripod-based operations

You can also switch off the IS function, if required.

Color Consistency – Canon refined their color science over many generations of lens designs. They paid close attention to pleasing skin tone reproduction. You can interchange Canon’s Cinema (CN-E) lenses and Compact-Servo lenses during the same product (or use one on Camera A and another lens family on Camera B) yet retain the same warm, cine-look color characteristics in your separate footage.

Servo Drive Unit – Power your zoom servo drive controls through the lens mount or via a separate port. This unit is compatible with Canon zoom and focus broadcast-style controllers. You can also mount an optional ZSG-C10 Zoom Servo Grip to the servo drive for handheld use.

Autofocus & Autoexposure – Ultrasonic Motor drives (USM) provide fast and quiet autofocus on this Compact-Servo lens. Canon Electromagnetic Diaphragm technology incorporates a motor directly to the lens iris for precise and smooth autoexposure response.

Extend your Focal Length – Expand your zoom range with an optional extender such as the Canon EF 1.4x or the EF 2x III Extender.

Manual Operation – Disengage the Servo controls for the focus, iris, and zoom rings to operate this lens in a manual mode. All three things deliver fluid operation. In full manual mode, the barrel rings are direct controls for the precise adjustments you require. You can rotate the focus ring 130° for accurate mark settings. Due to the gearing on the lens rings you also have the option to engage separate accessory controllers.

  • Focus Ring 0.8M Gear
  • Iris Ring 0.5M Gear
  • Focus Ring 0.5M Gear

The Compact-Servo lens family supports a wide range of optional accessories. Please recall when pairing the 70-200mm with a mattebox that the front diameter of this lens is 84mm without the removable, included sunshade. It accepts 77mm screw-in filters. You can choose an optional lens support foot to stabilize the lens on rods.
