Overview
The VRI Phantom v2640 Onyx Ultra-High-Speed Cinema Camera offers an exclusive solution for our rental partners and direct rental clients, with user-friendly features, an all-black, low-profile housing, and a specially designed optical low pass filter (OLPF) to reduce aliasing artifacts and moiré caused by the sensor's bayer pattern CFA. The sensor's huge 13.5 μm pixel size makes it very sensitive to light (far superior to Phantom Flex cameras in lower light conditions, or at very high speeds).
Onyx is the world's fastest 2K sensor high speed camera, designed specifically for the media and cinema production industry, capturing up to 6,600 fps at its full resolution of 2048 x 1952. Onyx can capture up to 12,500 fps at 1080p, and a staggering 19,690 fps at 720p (in High Speed Mode). Standard Modes are also available to achieve the least amount of noise, though maximum frame rates are reduced (see detailed Specifications below). The Onyx saves full internal RAM (144GB) to a compatible CineMag in 1 minute.
The Onyx features a very low 7.2e- noise rating, the lowest of any Phantom camera. When combined with its 64.1dB dynamic range (the highest of any global shutter Phantom camera), the user will experience exceptionally clear footage with fine detail in the brightest and darkest areas of the image (Correlated Double Sampling, or CDS, in standard mode provides a clean image in dark regions).
IMPORTANT NOTE: This camera is very power intensive, drawing 7.6A at idle, and over 8.5A at max fps on 24V (i.e., 208W without the EVF). The camera runs on dual 280W AC power supplies, rather than a more common single PSU configuration. Use of a robust 24V block battery will be the only (current) option for remote power.
Interchangeable lens mounts increase flexibility by adapting to Nikon, PL, C, PV, and Canon EF with electronic control. The Canon EF mount is identical to that of the Flex 2K (i.e., different from the Flex 4K EF Mount).
NOTE: When changing a lens mount, the OLPF detaches along with the mount, exposing the sensor (just like the Flex 2K, and unlike the Flex 4K/VEO). Extreme care must be taken when changing the lens mount due to the exposed sensor.
