Sony a7S II 4K Full Frame Mirrorless E-mount Camera

Abel Code: Sony a7S II
Mfr. Code: ILCE7SM2/B
The palm-sized Sony a7S II is a full-frame, image-stabilized mirrorless camera (E-Mount) which records 1080p up to 120fps in XAVC S internally and can output 4K to an external recorder or record UHD 4K at 30fps internally. Ideal for smooth, handheld work.
Key Highlights
  • 12.2MP Exmore CMOS Sensor
  • Records internal 4K Full-Frame movies
  • 5-axis SteadyShot image stabilizer

The Sony a7S II is an image-stabilized mirrorless camera with full-frame recording and a wide sensitivity range from ISO 50 to 409600 for stills and ISO 100 to 102400 for video/movies. You can capture 120fps in Full HD (1920x1080) with the entire sensor. The a7S II features the same, reliable 24.3MP Exmore CMOS sensor as the previous Sony a7 lineup.

Enhancements & Improved Ergonomics

The major upgrades include 5-axis (vertical, horizontal, pitch, yaw, and roll) image stabilization which is sensor-based. This stabilization transforms the a7S II into a handheld camera with smooth images with low noise. Design adjustments adjusted grip and balance and provided new homes for select buttons (shutter/power/front control dial). Improved autofocus functions are now in place due to algorithm changes. In addition, Sony added enhanced image contrast with 169 AF points. The a7S II also includes four custom function buttons. You can view video on the LCD monitor or edit into appealing 4x/5x slow motion footage in full HD resolution.

The grip upgrade of the a7S II improved the handling of this palm-sized camera. In addition, the a7S II includes a larger body made entirely of magnesium alloy with a dimpled, matte finish instead of the polished finished on previous models. This may help hide the normal wear and tear on the camera body which comes from frequent usage. The body is dust and moisture-resistant, but is not waterproof. You will need to add rain protection on inclement shoot days.

A new, durable braking mechanism in the shutter cuts mechanical front and rear curtain vibration by about 50%. Use the electronic front curtain shutter mode to reduce vibration further. The new addition reduces noise while minimizing camera shake. Sony tested this mechanism on the a7S II to 500,000 cycles.

Sensor & Recording

With a powerful BIONZ X image processor, the 12.2 effective megapixel full-frame Exmore CMOS sensor captures with a wide range of sensitivity. ISO ranges for video from 100 to 102400. More light is captured with the a7S II which results in low-noise images and the ability to capture well in low-light conditions.

Sony states that the a7S II products no line skipping or pixel binning with high resolution images. You can now record 4K in Super35 and uncompressed 4:2:2 Full HD or 4K QFHD output via HDMI to an optional third-party recorder.

Record in XAVC S codec, AVCHD, and MP4, plus JPEG, uncompressed RAW, and RAW + JPEG. With XAVC S you can record 50MB/s bit rate at 1080 at 60p/30p//24p. Both AVCHD and MP4 can be created.

You can also use advanced feature settings to manipulate, convert, or manage RAW full-resolution images. Here you can adjust exposure, white balance, tonal curves, saturation, contrast, hue, and sharpness, plus apply DRO and employ vignetting compensation.

Workflow & Picture Profile Settings

You can now employ S-Log3, S-Log2, and S-Gamut3 to simplify color correction and deliver 14 stops of dynamic range in the S-Log3 codec to better control shadows and highlights. The camera adjusts gamma, blacks, level/color, magnify, and more.

User Customization & Settings

Customize 10 buttons on the a7S II by selecting 64 different functions to assign.

Here are some functions and modes which you may find helpful:

Peaking – Activate this function to color sharply focused areas of your image.

Zebra – This enhanced function pairs well with S-Log Gamma. It should assist you with adjusting high-contrast scenes and monitoring exposure values.

Gamma Display Assist – This added function permits you to pre-visualize a post-graded video when recording S-Log movies.

Creative Style – Select any of the 13 Creative Style settings such as Vivid, Portrait, etc. to adjust image parameters. You can fine-tune the contrast and saturation as well, unless you are black/white or sepia modes.

Silent Shutter – This mode mutes the shutter in quiet environments. Record up to 5fps in this mode. Customize it to a handy button so you can turn this mode off/on, as needed.

Bright Monitoring – Ideal for starry skies or dark interiors. It boosts image brightness by changing the shutter speed. It, like may other settings can be assigned to custom buttons.

Auto Focus

Choose your auto focus settings based upon what best-suits the movement of your subject.

AF-S (Single-Shot AF) – Motionless subjects can be locked in focus with this setting

AF-C (Continuous AF) – If shutter button is pressed and held halfway down your camera will continue to focus while your subject is in motion.

Select a focusing area when AF-S or AF-C isn’t sufficient. The Sony a7S II offers these settings:

Wide focus

Zone setting with 9 focus areas and AF

Center setting will apply AF to the central image

Flexible Spot moves the AF range frame and can concentrate on a small subject in a narrow area

Expand Flexible Spot permits more accurate focusing by letting you focus around a small subject

Lock-on AF will track a subject within a select autofocus area which you determine using both Focus AF and Lock-on AF together. It also permits flexible spots and expanding flexible spots to pinpoint what you require.

WiFi Connectivity & Tethering

Connect via built-in WiFi to a compatible smartphone (iOS or Android) or tablet using the free PlayMemories Mobile App. Control your camera and shutter, create time lapse, preview/frame, or transfer a photo or MP4 movie to your device for sharing on social media or backup to the Cloud. Near Field Communication (NFC) boasts the ability to connect with one touch.

You can also tether your camera to a PC for remote control capabilities. It also lets you transfer files using a USB cable. Video Capture Control is not an added function here.

Multiple Lens Options

Pair this camera with E-Mount lenses or shoot with use an optional adapter to capture with A-mount, FE lenses.

Upgraded OLED Viewfinder

Sony upgraded the XGA 0.5” OLED Tru-Finder which features the high magnification of 0.78x (approx. 38.5 degrees in diagonal FOV). ZEISS T* coating delivers reflection reduction. Unlike an optical viewfinder, the OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder shows how exposure compensation, white balance, and other settings are affecting your imagery.

Power your a7S II via USB connection to an AC adapter, a PC, or a mobile battery. Charge the internal camera battery via that same connection when the power is off.

Tilting LCD Monitor

Sony incorporated a bright, 3” tilting LCD monitor into the design. It includes an increased resolution (1,228.8k-dots). Tilt upward 107° and downward 41° so you can capture high or low angle shots and still see the monitor.

A Multi Interface (IM) shoe is compatible with Sony’s optional extended microphones to permit pro XLR mic systems and the balance of recorded audio. The a7S audio features include audio level controls, AAC/Linear PCM, and Audio Out Timing for Line or Lip Sync, plus 1/8” microphone and headphone jacks.
