DP Veronica Bouza Chooses ALEXA 35 for Indie Feature "Grassland"

For her upcoming feature, Grassland, cinematographer Veronica Bouza chose the new ARRI ALEXA 35. The production filmed both indoors and outdoors on location, putting the camera through its paces in various configurations, ranging from handheld to tripod to Steadicam.

Since part of the film takes place in the wilderness, the team’s last exterior shooting day was in a field, with the weather being an overcast mix of sun and clouds. The ALEXA 35 turned out to be the perfect camera for capturing these shifting lighting conditions. Bouza said, "using the ALEXA 35 I've noticed it's been able to handle highlights really well. So, I've been overexposing by about a third. It's one of those cameras where I feel like if anything, I'm taking away light more than I'm actually adding light."

While many of the crew had experience working with ARRI cameras before, they unanimously agreed that the ALEXA 35 was definitely an upgrade. They specifically mentioned the quality of the sensor, the resolution, the color balance, and the way it captured highlights. "I love the versatility of the camera,” exclaimed Bouza.

On a smaller project such as this, working with a limited crew, transitioning a camera through various setups can be a time-consuming process. Though the team primarily used the camera handheld while in the field, the easy-to-release, toolless top handle enabled them to make an easy transition to Steadicam work. The ALEXA 35’s lightweight, compact nature makes it easy to transport and travel with. Bouza praised the camera’s modular design, which allowed for quick transitions between the different production modes.

Since many of the crew had plenty of prior experience with ARRI cameras, their feedback on the ALEXA 35 was all the more detailed. They appreciated the ALEXA 35’s expanded lens compatibility, which allows for a wider range of optics. They also had positive reviews for the changes made to the body, such as the increased number of ports and improved ability to mount accessories – all while maintaining a low weight and profile for the build. ARRI even paid attention to details such as the new placement of the eye piece cable, which addresses one of the most common pieces of feedback on ALEXAs in the past.

With its upgraded sensor, sleek and compact build, plus the ability to move quickly through various shooting scenarios, the ALEXA 35 turned out to be the perfect choice for this indie production in search of an intimate, nostalgic look.
