What was it about the Canon 45-135mm Flex Zoom that attracted you to the lens?
We were attracted to the Canon 45-135mm Flex Zoom due to its full frame format and what we considered the perfect focal range. We looked at other zooms, but this was the only one that really fit what we were after range-wise. It was also great that it opened up to a T2.4, giving a shallower depth of field if I needed it.
Are there any specific features of the Flex Zoom that guided your decision?
In addition to the full frame coverage and focal range, we appreciated that it was relatively fast and lightweight.
What do you feel is this zoom’s biggest draw for use in commercial work, or any other type of project, and did it have any positive effects on your workflow?
The biggest draw for us with the Flex Zoom was the ability to move quickly. Since it covers such a wide range of focal lengths, it made our process much faster than previous shoots as it allowed me to show the director different focal lengths. So, we got more shots than we would have on primes.
Another positive change I found was that the lens was quite sharp wide open, so I was not afraid to shoot at a T2.4 when we needed the additional light.
Were you, or have you considered, using Flex Zooms in combination with any other Canon optics?
For this project, we wanted to stick with just the zoom. But, in the future, I would love to use the Canon Flex Zooms together with the Canon CN-E lenses.
Having shot with the 45-135mm Flex, have you thought about how you might use it in the future, for specific applications?
I definitely see using it on another commercial like this but also for any documentary jobs I shoot. Having the additional range and speed is exactly what I’m after for these documentary jobs.
What has been your overall experience working with AbelCine?
AbelCine is my go-to rental house because of the quality of the gear and people that work there. The staff have even helped me discover new pieces of gear, such as the Canon Flex Zoom, which have greatly improved my workflow.
