All-In-One For Everyone: RED’s RANGER Now Available with GEMINI, HELIUM, and MONSTRO

Ever since the introduction of the RED RANGER camera system, initially available only with a MONSTRO 8K VV sensor (and only to RED-approved rental houses worldwide), cries to make the camera available with a broader range of RED sensors have echoed far and wide across the camerasphere. Now, those cries have been answered.

Today, RED’s all-in-one RANGER camera system is available with your choice of sensor: MONSTRO 8K VV, HELIUM 8K S35, and, perhaps the most exciting option, GEMINI 5K S35 -- with its support for dual-base ISOs of 800 and 3200 and a sensor format that allows shooting classic 2x squeeze-factor anamorphic lenses without compromise. Also, the camera system is now generally available for anyone to purchase.

While RANGER can’t be called a DSMC2 “brain”, it does feature, built-in, almost everything one would need to accessorize a DSMC2 camera with in order to head out with a “shootable package,” and some unique features as well. More than that, the new pricing reflects an aggressive “deal” on the part of RED (vs. their typically modular approach): RANGER, with GEMINI 5K S35 sensor, will start at an amazing $24,950, and with HELIUM 8K S35, the camera will be $29,950.

Featuring, for the first time, an integrated 5-pin XLR audio input, capable of supporting two channels of analog audio, crucially with +48V phantom power, the RANGER is a compelling new option for documentary and reality shooters looking to lend RED's top-shelf cinematic image quality to their projects. The camera also features integrated I/O, with a total of three SDI outputs (two that are “clones” of one another and another independent signal path), wider voltage tolerance (11.5-32V), two each 12- and 24V outputs, a 12V P-Tap on the body, genlock, timecode, USB, and RED’s control port (CTRL). Also on-board are a PL-mount (which can be shimmed for dead-on back focus), a larger diameter fan for better thermal performance, and choice of integrated V-Lock or Gold Mount battery terminals.

RANGER also supports the same maximum frame rates, REDCODE RAW settings and acquisition formats, as well as the standard maximum data rates (up to 300MB/sec.), and Apple ProRes and Avid codec as the DSMC2 cameras featuring these same sensors.
