Sony Releases BURANO Firmware Version 2

Sony has released the long-awaited version 2 firmware update for the BURANO cinema camera (available as version 2.01 on the Sony website). The update provides new recording formats, new cinema-friendly features, exposure tools, and a host of other updates.

New Recording Formats

With firmware version 2.0, BURANO can record a down-sampled file in its 'FFcrop' mode (at 3.8K 16:9, super-sampled from 6K) at up to 120 fps. Additionally, the S35 sensor mode can now be down-sampled to record in HD resolution at up to a staggering 240 fps (with the caveat that SDI and HDMI outputs become unavailable; however, the LCD/viewfinder can still be used for monitoring and framing).

Cinema-Friendly Upgrades

With firmware 2.0, BURANO's S35 sensor mode can now be configured to a 4:3 aspect ratio — perfect for anamorphic shooting — at up to 60 fps. Additionally, a de-squeeze factor of 1.8x has been added, enabling shooting on ultra high-end, large image circle anamorphic lenses such as Cooke's Full Frame Plus Anamorphic /i primes. Adding to its cinematic pedigree, BURANO can now shoot at 24.00 fps (aka "24-flat") to its on-board X-OCN RAW codec.

Output Enhancements, New Exposure Tools...

  • Those familiar with Sony's useful High/Low key method of evaluating exposure — particularly useful when dialing in complex HDR shots — can now find it on BURANO with firmware 2.0.
  • As well, the handy VF Gamma Display Assist feature is now available for use in monitoring when using S-Log3.
  • The Active/High modes of BURANO's innovative sensor-based image stabilization are now available in the FF crop 6K and S35 1.9K 16:9 sensor recording modes.
  • Slow & Quick (BURANO's variable frame rate mode) now includes increments of 66, 72, 75, 88, 90, 96, and 110 fps.
  • The number of slots available for saving a White Balance memory has been expanded from 3 to 8.
  • A dedicated 1920x1080 HD resolution monitoring mode (called ‘[Monitor FHD]’) has been added as a factory preset for SDI output when shooting both X-OCN and XAVC. This monitoring mode also allows the same info overlay to be shown whether shooting in XAVC or X-OCN RAW.
  • BURANO's on-screen display has been improved, placing camera status information outside of the image along a black border when using the new Monitor FHD mode (available over both the HDMI and SDI output).
  • Lastly, lens breathing compensation and image stabilization information is now captured as metadata when shooting in X-OCN.

...And Much More Numerous other tweaks and enhancements bring the BURANO into its own as a top-shelf option for a broad range of projects:

  • Timecode and Clip Name metadata are now overlaid to [Monitor FHD]
  • Support for 23.98PsF for SDI output
  • Image quality is improved in S-Log3 external output in Base Look
  • 709tone is newly added as a preset Base Look
  • Improved image quality when applying user 3D LUTs
  • Compatible with commands for PL lenses supporting Cooke’s /i Technology
  • Focus & Zoom can be controlled on the BURANO, from the M&C app or via external devices; iris can only be controlled from the Remote Control Panel
  • A 24V option is added to the PL mount voltage setting (PL-Mt Voltage)
  • Autofocus improvement when recording with 29.97P, 25P, 24P, and 23.98P
  • Proxy recording is now available with a system frequency of 24P
  • Factory-reset frequency is changed from 59.94P to 23.98P
  • In addition to Reset/Reset without Network, the [Reset to Factory Defaults] menu is now available to initialize all settings e.g., password, User 3D LUTs in memory
  • Variable ND control is now possible from the Remote Control Panel (RCP)
  • “Imager Temperature” is added to the status screen (Information screen)
  • “Format Media” can be executed from the status screen (Media screen)
  • Camera ID and Reel # can be set in the status screen (Project screen)
  • Tally control is now possible from external devices connected via wired-LAN

Version 2.0 firmware for the BURANO is available as a free download directly from Sony.

Sony’s newest full-frame CineAlta camera, BURANO, came to market earlier this year to great fanfare and robust sales. The combination of an 8.6K sensor, similar to the one found in Sony’s flagship VENICE 2 CineAlta camera, combined with a smaller, lighter body and a compelling complement of codecs, has proven popular with a broad swathe of customers.
