At the Bench: ARRI Pro Set for the Sony VENICE Camera

Recently I had the opportunity to check out the ARRI Pro Set for the Sony VENICE and the ARRI VENICE Extension Unit Set Pro. When working with the Sony VENICE Extension Unit, aka "Rialto," you can rig the camera in so many ways that it's crucial to have versatile accessories.

The extension block accessories have a lot of components all with multiple mounting points that allow for easy rigging, which is crucial for this camera set up so we can mount all of our camera accessories. The rig includes a top and bottom plate with 15mm lightweight rod support, side brackets, top handle, back plate, rod mounting bracket, ARRI rosette adaptors, an ARRI cable clamp, and even a wooden handgrip for when using the sensor block in handheld mode. With this set up, both the camera body and extension unit have risers and bridge plates so they can easily slide onto a standard dovetail if using the camera on sticks as shown in the video. Also, the screwheads and taps where many of the plates and other accessories mount use what ARRI calls Multi Hex -- they can be tightened/loosened with any of #3, #4, or #5, in standard 'HEX' sizes, and are also compatible with 5/32" imperial keys.

All of these accessories allow you to quickly change configuration from sticks, to handheld, to other creative ways of using the camera.

Also shown in this video is the ARRI Pro set for the Sony VENICE. This set is also extremely versatile as it includes components that can allow you to use it in lightweight or studio mode depending on your needs. I show it here in the video in studio mode when rigged with the extension unit, and then in lightwight mode as well.

For example, if you want to work with the camera with a studio rod set up, you can use the bridge plate adaptor with a standard bridge plate. One thing to point out with these accessories is they are not only versatile in terms of which components you use, but also once they are set up on the camera, items like the camera center handle and the plate can slide back and forth to find the perfect balance for your configuration.
