At the Bench: Movcam Wireless Lens Control System

Movcam has released its Dual-Axis Wireless Control System, and what strikes you right away is its modular design and ease of use. The SCU-1 handset features a small LCD screen, which instantly gives the status of critical parameters such as channel and signal strength. Calibrating motors is a one-touch operation.

The unit includes a record button, and a button right next to the focus wheel to set focus limits. It is as easy as touching the button once for each focus mark, and you are set. When you want to return to the full focus range, simply press the button one more time.

A modular ZSU-1 unit can be attached to the handset or attached to a pan arm via the built in rosette. A familiar aircraft joystick design activates zooming. An LCD screen is built into the back of the ZSU-1 to change the same parameters as on the handset. A hardwire connection between the ZSU-1 and the receiver provides power and communication to the motors when attached to a pan arm. Power and communication is established via a multi connector when attached to the handset.

The supplied UM-1 motors can adapt to either 15mm or 19mm support rods. The lens gear can be switched to either side of the motor making it easy to configure to different lenses. A red button on each motor allows you to either individually calibrate the motor or reverse the direction of the focus pull. Watch my video above to learn more and to see the system in action.

Tech News
I'm here at the 16x9 booth today speaking with James Lee who has some nice updates to Movcam's wireless system to show us. The system features three-channel focus, iris and zoom ("FIZ") control and a hand unit with a touch screen and storable lens mappings. Operating either hard-wired or on the 2.4GHz band, the unit features settable focus points and even vibrates when a focus point is reached.

Recently, I had the opportunity to check out the Bright Tangerine Revolvr follow focus. We sometimes think of these types of tools as pretty basic, despite being indispensable on set.
