First Look: Sony FX6 Full-Format Digital Cinema Camera

In this video, I take a look at Sony’s latest full-format camera in their cinema line, the FX6. The FX6 slots in below the FX9 in Sony’s lineup, but don’t let that fool you — it’s got a number of headline features that make it a more than worthy contender.

I’ll also take a look at the first in a new series of purpose-built full-format E-mount cinema lenses from Sony that feature autofocus, electronically controlled iris and servo zoom control: the FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G.

Using a smaller body, reminiscent of the FS5 and FS5 II, the FX6 packs a 4K full-frame sensor with similarly staggering low-light capabilities as the A7S III, along with Fast Hybrid Auto Focus, high frame rates (up to 120 fps in UHD and 240 fps in full HD), a full-frame E mount, and full Cine EI mode with S-Log3 for more than 15 stops of dynamic range.

I discuss the body design, sensor and recording capabilities, inputs and outputs, touch-screen menus, and finally wrap up with a look at the new lens. Sony’s brought a number of technologies together to create the FX6, and with comparatively few compromises, so be sure to check out the video for much more on this exciting new full-format camera.
