Overview

Overview

The Sony Alpha a7R III Mirrorless Digital Camera with E-Mount features 5-axis SteadyShot Image Stabilization, high dynamic range, and captures 4K images and video with a 42.4 MP CMOS sensor.

Enhanced Image Processor

The image processing system on this version of the a7 family of cameras evolved to deliver high resolution and low noise throughout a wider ISO range. The camera depicts the mood of every scene's surroundings, as well as texture of details.

It includes a 42.4MP* Full Frame Exmor R CMOS sensor. The Exmor R sensor's back-illuminated, gapless on-chip lens design increases light sensitivity and provides wide dynamic range, despite its high resolution of 42.4MP

NOTE: Approximate number of effective pixels.

Boosted Processing Speed

A new front-end LSI and BIONZ X™ boost processing speed and are teamed with the Exmor R™ sensor to deliver up to 15-stop dynamic range at low ISO sensitivity for stills, enabling richer tonal expression.

Reduced Image Noise

The standard ISO range has been extended to ISO 100-32000 (expandable to ISO 50-102400 for still image only), and noise has been reduced by as much as a full stop in the mid sensitivity range, as compared to the a7R II under Sony test conditions.

14-Bit RAW Output for Rich Gradations

14-bit RAW uncompressed format output contains rich tonal information from highlights to shadows, and is available even when shooting in silent or continuous mode. You can achieve 12-bit RAW compressed format during continuous shooting (BULB exposure or when Long Exposure NR is set to ON).

OLED Viewfinder

High-resolution, 3.69 million-dot Quad-VGA OLED Tru-Finder provides natural, high-precision viewfinder image. The functional advantages of an EVF, such as high visibility in darkness and AF capability when using magnified display, is further enhanced for powerful shooting support. For even greater versatility, the α7R III's small, light body is robust and rigid enough for rugged use.

"Hi" quality mode provides extra-fine views of natural realism on a bright display.

Set the viewfinder's frame rate to 120/1000fps (NTSC/PAL) for smooth display so it is easier to track a dynamic subject.

Continuous Shooting

You can shoot silently up to 10fpscontinuous shooting with AF/AE tracking. *** Silence is critical for shooting wildlife, when even the slightest noise can mean missing a chance at an ideal shot.

Capture up to 76 compressed RAW or JPEG images in a continuous burst.**** This allows you to concentrate on burst shooting without distraction. With uncompressed RAW images you can record up to 28 exposures.

Group Display is an option for a series of photos shot in continuous mode. That way you can review the captured content in Groups, plus play index display is improved, and continious groups can be deleted or protected at once.

*** NOTE: In continuous "Hi+" Mode, and up to 8fps in continuous "Hi" Mode. Maximum fps will depend on camera settings. A software update may be required for some lenses. Please refer to Sony's support site for compatibility details.

**** NOTE: In continuous "Hi+" Mode with your UHS-II compatible SDHX memory card, under Sony text conditions.

Evolved AF Performance

AF performance is improved by inheriting the AF performance used in the α9 and applying it optimally, so once the α7R III captures a wild animal that moves unpredictably, it won’t easily let it go.

Comprehensive Fast Hybrid AF Coverage

399 phase-detection AF points covering approx. 68% of image area width and height plus 425 densely positioned contrast-detection AF points improve focus that might otherwise be unachievable.

Up to 2x Faster AF Response in Low-Light Conditions

Thanks to much more responsive, enhanced Fast Hybrid AF, AF speed is up to approximately two times faster under dim light conditions than its predecessor, your a7R II camera.

Improved AF by 2x Compared to a7R II

The AF algorithm inherited from the α9 accounts for two times more precise shooting, even of complex or shudden movements.

Reliable AF down to EV-3 Brightness

Advanced AF algorithms contribute to high AF precision down to light levels as low as EV-3 , for more reliable autofocus in dark scenes. EV-3 is an ISO 100 equivalent (with an F2.0 lens in AF-S Mode).

Eye AF with Doubled Performance

With the α7R III, Eye AF evolves with two times more immediate, effective eye detection and tracking, even when shooting a moving portrait subject, as compared to the α7R II. This is the case when the face is partially hidden from view by a item in the foreground of your focus plane. Plus, when your subject is looking down or in dim light.

NOTE: These functions depend on your shooting conditions to be effective.

Image Stabilization

Thanks to enhanced 5-axis in-camera image stabilizer, whenever you want to move and shoot freely, you can rely on the α7R III's high-resolution performance and mobility, in order to concentrate on the subject without worrying about various types of camera-shake blur.

  • Pitch & yaw compensation
  • Horizontal/veritcal shift compensation
  • Roll compensation

The new stabilization unit/gyro sensors/algorithms effectively raise 5.5 stops.***** (5) types of cameras shake—angular shake (pitch/yaw), X/Y shift, and rotational shake (roll)—are compensated.

***** NOTE: IPA standards. Pitch/yaw shake only. Planar T* FE 50mm F1.4 ZA lens. Long exposure NR off.

Additional Autofocus Functionality

New multi-selector, AF-ON button, and touch focus functions make focus operation quick and intuitive. With built-in dual slots and compatibility with large-capacity rechargeable-battery NP-FZ100, the α7R III also ensures that you can shoot with far less interruption, because you won't need to change media and battery as frequently.

AF-ON allows you to activate autofocus and concentrate on timing an instant shutter release, without a half-pres focus sequence.

4D FOCUS

Conventional autofocus (AF) deals with space alone. 4D FOCUS goes one step further with an innovative image sensor that picks up both space and time to capture moving subjects with new clarity, allowing you to take crisper photos than ever. Plain-old AF is a thing of the past. The future of photography is in motion.

Wide - AF Area (2D)

Capture the action across a wide area, even off the center of the frame. 4D FOCUS activates AF points across a wide area, so the camera can detect subjects throughout the entire frame, instead of just the center.

Fast Focus - Depth (3D)

Focus quickly, whether your subject is moving closer or further away. 4D FOCUS instantly detects the distance to your subject and focuses quickly and accurately with advanced AF algorithm, so you never miss decisive moments.

Steadfast Tracking - Time (4D)

The fourth dimension of 4D FOCUS is time, accurately predicting and stably tracking your subject's next move, without distraction by other obstacles in the frame. The AF Algorithm in the Sony Alpha a7R III stays focused on the action so you retain sight of your subject.

Dual Media Slots

With two media slots, including one that’s UHS-II-compatible for fast data writing, the α7R III can simultaneously or relay record, separate RAW/JPEG data and stills/movies, and copy data between cards.

Power

The α7R III can use an optional NP-FZ100 battery with approx. 2.2 times as much capacity as your NP-FW50 battery. USB Type-C™ and Multi/Micro USB ports allow connection of external batteries for extended shooting.

Professional Workflow

The α7R III includes USB 3.1 Gen 1 compatible USB Type-C™ port and sync terminals that enable the camera to be connected directly to external devices without delay. These connections make workflow more seamless and stress-free, even for studio shooting that makes use of PC tethered shooting or flash.

USB 3.1 Gen 1 for Fast Data Transfer

This makes PC tethered shooting available for smooth handling of big RAW image files, so you can quickly review images on a PC and continue shooting without much delay for file transfers.

Pixel Shift Multi Shooting

This new Pixel Shift Multi Shooting reproduces still images that contain true-to-life detail, texture, color, and overall atmosphere.

Free Imaging Edge App

Free dedicated software application (Imaging Edge) is required for compositing on a personal computer. Imaging Edge is a software suite for greater efficiency and image quality in shooting and creative work. It provide a top-quality RAW development, convenient PC tethering, and efficient viewing/management tools.

Image compositing may not be successful if camera or subject movement causes blur. The use of a tripod is recommended, as is the use of PC remote function or a remote commander where possible. Uncompressed RAW format and silent mode are automatically selected for Pixel Shift Multi shooting. Some restrictions apply to flash and other devices. Refer to the Sony support site for details.

To use Free Imaging Edge (Remote/Viewer/Edit) software:

Windows computer requires: 64-bit Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows 10. Display at least 1280x720.

Mac computer requires:64-bit OS X v10.11 / macOS 10.12-10.13. Display at least 1280x720.

Free Capture One Express (for Sony) App

Capture One Express (for Sony) is a free software for high-quality finishing of RAW data.

NOTE: Phase One, and not Sony, should be contacted in regards to usage and support, plus functional compatibility of Capture One Express (for Sony).

High-Resolution 4K HDR

In addition to capability to record stunning high-resolution 4K movies through 5K (15MP) oversampling, the camera features a new HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile, supporting instant HDR workflow, that offers wide dynamic range for highly precise and lifelike movie images without color grading.

The α7R III features S-Log for flexible expression of images in post-production and HLG for instantaneous HDR workflow - a combination that fulfills various HDR production requirements.

Movies recorded in HLF picture mode will appear true-to-life with suppressed blocked shadows or blown highlights, without color grading.

In addition to S-Log2, the α7R III offers S-Log3 for better gradation from shadows to mid-tones and a wide dynamic range of up to 14 stops. New S-Gamut3/S-Gamut3.Cine wide color space is also supported.

NOTE: A Class 10 or higher SDHC/SDXC card is required for XAVC S format movie recording. UHS Speed Class 3 or higher card is required for 100Mbps recording. Also note, connect this product to an HDR (HLG) compatible Sony TV via a USB cable when displaying HDR (HLG) movies.

Additional Features

1.44 milion-dot tilting LCD Screen

3.0-type 1.44 million-dot high-resolution LCD tilts upwards and downwards for flexible framing and monitoring of each shot so you can capture images with your camera underslung or overhead.

Rugged Reliability

The Sony Alpha a7R III offers a rugged body to withstand the rigors of daily use.

Tough Magnesiom Alloy Chassis

Light, high-rigidity magnesium alloy top cover, front cover, internal frame, and rear cover help make the body very durable.

Comfortable, Rigid Grip

The feel of the camera with a large-aperture lens attached has been improved after reexamination of the grip shape, with help from professional users.

Dust- and Moisture-Resistant

All major buttons and dials are sealed to minimize entry of dust and moisture, ensuring reliable function in tough shooting conditions.**

** NOTE: Just like other products, such as lenses which are moisture-resistant and not water proof, Sony states that this camera is not 100% dust- and moisture- proof.

Low-Vibration Shutter
