ALEXA Mini Brings Breakthrough Mobility to the ALEXA Family

Arri ALEX Mini

Arri just announced the latest addition to the ALEXA family, the all new ALEXA Mini. Coming in at a svelte 7.3" x 4.9" x 5.5" (LxWxH) and weighing only 5 pounds, the Mini compliments the series with the same S35 ALEV III CMOS sensor found in the ALEXA and AMIRA. Utilizing a carbon body with titanium lens mount attached directly to the titanium sensor mount, the Mini shares the same PL, EF and B4 bayonet lens mounts, as well as the same MVF-1 viewfinder as the AMIRA.

The powerful record options include ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 4444XQ, and ARRIRAW (all in 16:9 or 4:3 modes), with the ProRes codecs supporting HD, 2K, 3.2K, and 4K UHD. Like the AMIRA, the Mini records to CFast 2.0 cards at a maximum frame rate of 200 fps at HD or 2K, but can also record ARRIRAW up to 30 fps. In addition to the internal ARRIRAW capabilities, the Mini can also output ARRIRAW via 6G-SDI to the new Codex Multi-Camera Recorder at 120 fps. The Multi-Camera recorder can simultaneously record ARRIRAW from up to four ALEXA Minis.

ALEXA Mini recording frame rates One of the main design goals wasn't just to shrink the dimensions of an ALEXA, but to build a camera that can be slotted into any situation an ALEXA or AMIRA cannot. As the list of supported record options indicates, the Mini makes no compromises and includes several features especially useful for those using gimbals (like the MoVI M15), aerial platforms, or underwater housings like the new Gates housing announced yesterday. Gates housing for ALEXA MiniIn addition to motorized ND filters (0.6, 1.2, 2.1), the ALEXA Mini's new active PL mount includes an integrated wireless lens motor controller that's compatible with the cmotion cforce motors. The cforce motors can be daisy chained, so you only need one connection on the camera body for Focus, Iris, and Zoom control. Like the AMIRA, the built-in WiFi control allows for camera control on your phone, tablet, or computer with a simple web-based interface, no app required.   Alexa Mini on MoVI M15With it's incredibly compact size, powerful record modes, and versatile control options the ALEXA Mini is a great addition to the family and opens up multiple options for your production. If you're in Las Vegas this April, be sure to check out the ALEXA Mini in our NAB booth #C8008!

In the mean time, enjoy this behind the scenes footage that shows how the ALEXA Mini with the MōVI M15 and CineStar 8 multirotor from Freefly Systems captured the short film The Balloonist.

The design of the ARRI ALEXA Mini lends itself to all kinds of rigging scenarios. It may be used in an aerial rig, or underwater housing, where the camera is not easily accessible and a viewfinder is not attached. In these situations, another method of changing the camera settings is required. Every ALEXA Mini has Wi-Fi built into it, and by default it is turned on.
