Faster, Lighter, Smarter: Cooke Launches New S8/i Full Frame Prime Lenses

Cooke announced the launch of a new line of Full Frame (aka Full Format) prime lenses – the S8/i series. These new flagship lenses slot in at the top of Cooke’s range of spherical Full Frame primes. The set will initially comprise focal lengths of 25mm, 32mm, 40mm, 50mm, 75mm, 100mm, and 135mm. Nine additional focal lengths are anticipated in Fall of 2022, including 18mm, 21mm, 27mm, 35mm, 65mm, 85mm MACRO, 180mm, 250mm, and 350mm.

All S8/i focal lengths open to a maximum aperture of T1.4 and feature 270° of rotation for focus and 90° of rotation for iris. Additionally, all S8/i lenses feature 104mm front outer diameters. The lenses are also comparatively lightweight, with the lightest (50mm) coming in at 4.7 lbs. and the heaviest (135mm) weighing 7 lbs. The 18mm and 21mm lengths cover diagonals up to 43.3mm, while all other lenses in the line cover up to 46.3mm. Most focal lengths are only 6.2” in length, with the 25mm being 6.4” long and the 135mm being 7.9”.

The S8s boast an all-spherical design, meaning that no aspherical lens elements are used. Cooke says this approach enables an evolution of the unique “Cooke Look” for modern cinematography, with smooth, round bokeh (out of focus highlight rendition) at all aperture settings, thanks to a nine-leaf linear iris assembly, as well as minimal color fringing. All S8/i lenses are matched with other Cooke lenses for uniformity and consistent color balance.

All the S8s also feature the latest developments in Cooke's /i metadata protocol, including /i data for focus and iris position, /i motion inertial data, and /i maps calibrated at the factory for each lens’ shading and distortion characteristics. The new electronics are also integrated into an overall modular design to increase reliability and reduce servicing time on the bench.

The new Cooke S8/i line is available in either PL or LPL mount and features Cooke’s tried-and-true cam-style focus mechanism, and a hard-wearing, scratch-resistant PTFE anodized finish. Cooke says that the new lenses are built to be tough and robust for use in demanding environments, while also being easy to service and maintain with minimal downtime.

The initial seven focal lengths of the S8s can be ordered starting today. Contact AbelCine Sales to get more information and place an order. More information is also available at cookeoptics.com.
