First Look: ARRI ALEXA LF

ARRI today announced their new ALEXA LF camera. The latest in their ALEXA camera line, it features a large format sensor. Watch my sneak peek at this exciting camera, as well as ARRI's new Signature Prime lenses.

ALEXA LF's sensor is slightly larger than full frame (36.70 x 25.54 mm) and has a full open gate resolution of 4448 x 3096 photosites. This is done by combining two ALEXA sensors together, just one less then is found in the ALEXA 65. Because of this, the camera has the same dynamic range, color, and characteristics found across the ARRI camera line.

The camera also features a new LPL (Large Positive Lock) mount that is designed to work with their new line of ARRI Signature Prime lenses. These new lenses, 16 in all, cover the full sensor of the LF and are all very fast – most being T1.8. The LPL mount can be adapted to work with PL lenses (an adapter is included with the camera), so existing PL lenses can also be used on the LF. ARRI has also announced LPL mounts for the ALEXA SXT and ALEXA Mini.

Other than the new sensor, the LF has the same feature set as the ALEXA SXT W, including all the wireless video and lens motor control. The body is just a little bit wider than the SXT W, to accommodate a new cooling system.

The workflow is also the same as the previous ALEXA models, but produces larger files. Recording options include ARRIRAW on Codex SXR mags at up to 90 frames Open Gate or 150 frames at UHD 4K, and of course ProRes recording is an option on SXS Pro+ 256 GB cards.
