Tutorials & Guides
Today Canon announced the C70, the latest model in their line of Cinema EOS digital cinema cameras. It uses the same Super35-format sensor as the C300 Mk III, including Canon’s DGO (Dual Gain Output) technology for 16+ stops of dynamic range, their legendary Dual-Pixel Autofocus, and is the first Cinema EOS camera to use Canon’s RF lens mount (which first debuted on the EOS R full-frame mirrorless stills-oriented body). All this is packed into the smallest Cinema EOS body ever – yet with few compromises in terms of the features and functionality Canon users have come to rely on over the years.

Digital video capture devices are omnipresent in our culture, and the average viewer’s subconscious understanding of what constitutes quality video is more informed than ever. Nearly everyone has a high-def capable (often 4K) camera in their pocket these days. With such a powerful imager so close at hand, more complex cameras need to reach ever higher and higher peaks of image quality. One of the many things that cinema cameras do to differentiate themselves is to offer high-latitude, extreme dynamic range gammas, like Log. However, “hybrid” gamma settings like Canon’s Wide Dynamic Range gamma, have distinct benefits too, especially in the remote production world.

If you've read some of the past content I've created here for AbelCine, then you may know I'm a long time user of Canon's Cinema EOS series cameras, most notably the C300 and C300 Mk II. I've used them extensively as a 1st AC supporting multiple cameras on commercial and corp/industrial jobs, and as an operator and DP on short form, documentary, and independent narrative work. So naturally, the release of the C500 Mk II is very interesting to me.

The Canon C700 FF and C200 cameras have similar sensors and produce a similar image, but the C700 is a full frame, studio style camera, while the C200 is much more geared for a one or two person crew. I tested out the cameras by shooting the same scene, which you can watch below, with both cameras to compare their ease-of-use, image quality, shooting speed, and convenience.

As a DP, when you get a phone call for a project, one of the first things you need to decide is what camera and lenses you’re going to use. Knowing what the content of the project is often drives both the shooting style and look of the piece.
