At the Bench: Sony NEX-EA50 Camera

Recently, I got a chance to check out the new NEX-EA50 camera from Sony. This new member of the NEX lineup is sort of the little-but-bigger brother of the FS100. It has many of the same features as the FS100, but it is designed to go on your shoulder with a unique shoulder pad design.

The NEX-EA50's sensor is not the same as the FS100's though - it is an APS-C size sensor that can do both 16mp stills and HD video. The E in the EA50's name stands for "event" and you can tell that Sony built it for those applications. A new 18-200 servo motor-driven lens ships with the camera, giving you the ability to do slow, but smooth zooms.

Watch my video above to learn more about the camera and check out the footage that I shot below.

Sony's new NEX-FS100 camera is a Compact HD camcorder that shares the same Super-35 sized sensor and image characteristics as the PMW-F3. Because of it's relative diminutiveness, the FS100 is suitable for many situations where larger cameras may not be. In this article, we present the many different lenses and accessories that can be used with the camera.

I stopped by the Sony booth, where Joseph Schimizzi talked me through their recent updates. A big focus for Sony this year has been increased support for HDR, and with these updates they are making the technology much more accessible to a larger base of users, and a wider audience.
