C300 Quick Tip: Updating Firmware

Canon's newest firmware update (1.0.4.1.00) for their C300 Mark II camera contains a number of nice improvements to the camera's features and functionality. One of the updates that caught our eye is the inclusion of a new logarithmic gamma curve, Canon Log 3, available from the Custom Picture menu.

Jonathan Barenboim is a director and cinematographer; sometimes, depending on the project, he's both simultaneously. On his latest project, for a series called The Table launching later this summer, he was tasked with bringing to life short documentaries highlighting the human side of the unemployment crisis in the US. Because of the documentary nature of these pieces, he had to be ready to travel quickly and shoot in varied locations, all with the same basic camera setup. Jonathan was kind enough to answer a few questions about how he pulled it all off.

Just over three years ago, I wrote up an article on how to import Canon C300 footage into various NLEs. The C300 Mark II has been out for some time now, but it's just recently that all the major software applications have supported it.
