Several months ago, Sony released a new user-changeable 2K optical low pass filter for their F5 and F55 cameras. The filters are incredibly easy to swap out by loosening just a single Philips screw in the upper right hand corner (yellow arrow in first picture above) of the filter. Simply slide the 4K filter to the right, and pull it away from the camera. The 2K filter then snaps right in, slides to the right, and is held in place with the same Philips screw.

Sony has just announced that they will be adding two new codecs to the F5 and F55 cameras: Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD.

Ahead of NAB, Sony has announced new AXS media for the AXS-R5 Raw recorder, which is designed to work with the F5, F55, and the FS700. These new cards have been shrunk in size from the original AXS 512 GB card (AXS-512S24), and are now the size of standard SxS cards.

In my last video on the Sony F5 and F55, I showed how firmware version 3.0 adds many new features to the cameras including a 2K Center Scan mode, which is just the right size for use with Super 16mm lenses.

In the Sony F5/F55's previous firmware versions, scene files had to be loaded manually via the Paint menu. Now, with the latest v3.0 update, there is a dedicated menu that supports the loading of scene files onto an SD card, as well as the camera's internal memory.

With the latest 3.0 firmware update, Sony has given users the ability to shoot a variety of high frame rates, but many people are still a bit confused about how to get to their desired frame rate. I've created a flow chart to help de-mystify the process, but first, let's go over the menu options needed.

Over the last couple of days, we've had some time to play with Sony's recently-released F5/F55 firmware version 3.0. The new firmware has tons of updates, which are outlined in Jeff's previous blog, but I wanted to specifically highlight a couple of the new features including Super16 Center Scan mode, new LUT options, and High Frame Rate mode.

Sony has added a ton of new features to the F5 and F55 with the release of their version 2.0 firmware (which you can download directly from Sony's Community site).

One of the more interesting features of the Sony F55 is its ability to record in 4K XAVC video while simultaneously recording in HD. This gives you the option of editing right away in the Sony MPEG2 HD format as a proxy, and then linking back to the 4K XAVC compression for finishing. Sounds great right?
