In this in-depth interview, AbelCine Director of Education Jeff Lee sits down – virtually – with director Greg Robbins and DP Chris Fanning of RDM to talk about their work in the world of virtual production.

Chapman University is a private research university located in Orange, California. It encompasses ten schools and colleges, including the Lawrence and Kristina Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, which has been recognized as one of the top ten film schools in the world. To better adapt to today's changing production needs, the team at Chapman developed a new curriculum around virtual production, including the installation of an LED wall on one of their sound stages.

At this point in time, audiences have become accustomed to the idea of award shows incorporating some version of remote or virtual collaboration, especially as travel restrictions keep much of the talent at home. So when Dick Clark Productions chose to reunite the Emmys producing team for this year's Golden Globes and reached out to Mike Nichols, AbelCine Business Development Manager, our previous experience with the remote camera and lighting kits proved invaluable. We were able to build, set up, deliver, and remotely control a number of identical "drop kits" that were delivered to various nominee locations across the country.

Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down for a conversation with Ellen Kuras, ASC to discuss her work as the cinematographer on David Byrne's American Utopia, a concert film directed by Spike Lee.

A law firm with offices in the US, Asia, and Europe reached out to AbelCine with specific streaming needs for their year-end meeting: high-quality video and rock-solid connectivity. The event, with over 350 participants, would take place virtually for the first time in 2020.

Complex Networks, the media company behind Hot Ones and Sneaker Shopping, reached out to AbelCine to engineer remote kits for their Twitch original programming contributors.

With award shows moving to virtual formats this year, the 2020 Creative Arts Emmy Awards is one of the highest profile events to make the transition. Over the summer, AbelCine created a range of remote production kits that enable high quality image capture in a safe, easy to set up, remote controllable package. As a result, the team at Done+Dusted, the producers of the Emmys telecast, tapped AbelCine to help build 25 remote kits for select nominees at the 2020 Emmy Awards.
