Cine Gear 2017 Roundup

This year’s Cine Gear Expo was definitely one of the most eventful ones. From new camera announcements to the latest in lighting technology and more, there was a little something for everyone to get excited about. In that vein, we’ve rounded up some of the most relevant coverage — both from our own specialists as well as our friends over at Newsshooter.

Watch the video above, featuring Erik Naso (Newsshooter), Jem Schofield (theC47) and our own Jeff Lee for a great round up and discussion of Cine Gear 2017 highlights, then continue below for specific product videos.

Panasonic

One of the most exciting announcements at the show was Panasonic’s unveiling of their brand new EVA1 camera. The EVA1 is a 5.7K cinema camera, featuring an EF mount and offering 4K up to 60p and 2K up to 240p. It has an MSRP of less than $8000 — which should make it quite attractive to the indie feature market — and should be shipping this fall. Watch Jeff’s interview with Mitch Gross at Panasonic’s booth for more details.

Schneider Optics

Ian stopped by the Schneider Optics booth to get a closer look at the new Radiant Soft filters (4×5.65, 6.6×6.6) which were officially rolled out at Cine Gear and will be looking to ship this summer. Due to a proprietary new engineering technique, these filters are available in strengths of ¼, ½, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 and prevent the need to reset the overall contrast grade of the scene after the desired diffusion is applied. Watch Ian’s video with Niki from Schneider Optics above to learn more.

ARRI

At the ARRI booth, Ian spoke with Philip Vicher, Product Manager, about the new LMB 4×5 mattebox. The LMB 4×5 is a lightweight, modular mattebox that is suited to a wide range of applications. It is especially useful in situations where weight might be a concern, such as with drone, gimbal, and Steadicam use. Watch the video above to learn more.

Bright Tangerine

In our own booth, we displayed the Phantom VEO kitted out with the Revolvr ATOM follow focus. The Revolvr ATOM is designed to be a smaller, lighter, single-sided version of their popular Revolvr. The Atom also features flexible mounting options as it is capable of mounting to 15mm or 19mm rods. Watch Ian’s video with Robert Eagle of Bright Tangerine to get a closer look.

SmallHD

Last but not least, Ian made his way over to the SmallHD booth to explore their new 503 and 703 UltraBright monitors. Designed to be even more rugged than their predecessors, the five-inch 503 features 2200 nit brightness while the seven-inch 703 features 2500 nit brightness. Watch Ian’s video with David Bradbury of SmallHD to learn more.

Sony CineAlta Camera Development

Another interesting announcement out of Cine Gear was Sony’s reveal that they are in development of a full-frame 36x24mm sensor for a new CineAlta camera, to be available in early 2018. If you missed Sony’s press conference, you can listen to the whole thing in the embedded Sound Cloud link above, or visit Newsshooter’s detailed blog post.

Phantom VEO and Cameo Accessories with ProductionHUB

Our friends at ProductionHUB also stopped by our Cine Gear booth to shoot a quick piece with Jeff. In this video, Jeff gives a little overview of what gear we’re displaying, specifically highlighting the Phantom VEO from Vision Research. He also shows off the various AbelCine-designed Cameo accessories, including the Swivel Mount and V-Lock.
