VariCam Technology Explained

NAB15-P1040167-720x443

Panasonic held a private technical presentation at NAB where they explained their sensor technology. Adam Wilt from DV Info Net was able to attend this session and posted a great article and slides from the presentation. Two sections of particular interest are on how their Dual Native ISO modes work and how wide their V-Gamut color gamut is.

For me, the most interesting slide is on "Improvement of Color Reproduction with Single Sensor System." It shows the color reproduction difference between a three-image sensor system (with separate RGB chips) versus a single-sensor Color Filter Array (CFA) system. As the slide explains, on conventional single-sensor designs there are many color reproduction issues caused by energy leaking from one color to another. Panasonic suggests that they have solved this problem with a new pigment material. For an interesting overview on the VariCam technology, check out the full article here: http://www.dvinfo.net/article/acquisition/nab-15-from-the-panasonic-private-suite.html

Panasonic's VariCam cameras are capable of capturing a wide dynamic range. In order to do this, Panasonic has their own Log recording codec, V-Log. V-Log is a gamma response designed to capture the full dynamic range off the sensor.
