Overview
The α6500 Sony Alpha Mirrorless Digital Camera (body only) features continuous shooting buffer, 5-axis stabilization, a touchscreen to modify focus without using the viewfinder, plus you can record 4K (3840 x 2160). S-Log3 setting offers 14-stop dynamic range with good production of shadows and highlights.
Features:
- Fast AF with 425 phase-detection autofocus points
- Built-in 5-axis image stabilization
- 24.2MP Exmore CMOS sensor
- Outstanding light sensitivity
- 4K move recording
- Sony E-Mount
This palm-sized mirrorless camera delivers professional level movies and stills with image stabilization and autofocus functions in a handheld camera body. Although this camera is sold without a lens, that is the only thing lacking. This camera is packed with features which will extend your capture abilities.
5-Axis Image Stabilization
Sony added an accurate gyro sensor for image stabilization with the effect of five-stops-faster* shutter speed. This camera shake compensation system is effective for shooting steadier, clearer movies and still images. A term you may hear in association with this is SteadyShot.
* This is based on CIPA standard. Sony achieved this with Pitch/Yaw stabilization only, using a Sonnar T* FE 55mm F1.8 mounted lens with long exposure NR turned off.
Use the 5-axis stabilizer with E-Mount lenses to minimize camera shake. You can also use an A-Mount Lens Adapter to choose from a selection of A-Mount lenses. Some third-party adapters exist which also function with the a6500 camera.
Sony lists compatibility with G Lens and G Master E-Mount lenses, select ZEISS lenses, several prime, zoom, and macro lenses, plus converters or mount adapters which fit ultra-wide or fisheye lenses. Find the full list of lenses in the camera technical specs.
Continuous Shooting
Use "Hi" continuous shooting mode and "Fine" image quality and the a6500's enhanced buffer will delivery continuous shooting of up to 307 shots.
Touch Pad Function
This handheld mirrorless camera features a touchscreen similar to your smartphone. You can swipe the LCD screen to shift a focus point even while watching the viewfinder. You can also focus with a finger touch within the frame so you can focus quickly and choose a particular subject during a decisive moment.
Exmor CMOS Image Sensor
With new front-end LSI, BIONZ X™ processes data from the Exmor CMOS image sensor for outstanding texture, clarity, and image sharpness with low noise in stills and movies.
This sensor features a thin wiring layer and large photodiode substrate to maximize light collection efficiency. Plus, copper wiring ensures a quick read-out. The sensor also extends sensitivity to ISO 512008 with reduced noise
Enhanced Image Processing
The BIONZ X™ image processing engine enhances image texture and clarity as it minimizes noise, with critical support from new front-end LSI and image processing algorithm optimized for the image sensor.
Record 4K Movies
Shoot and internally record 4K movies generated from 6K equivalent (20MP) data in Super 35mm format.
Oversampling (about 2.4 [or 1.6 times @ 30p] x [6K equivalent] as much image data condensed to 4K) achieves a high-quality 4K movie resolution.
Fast Hybrid Autofocus
The Fast Hybrid AF system with phase-detection AF (superior speed and tracking performance) and contrast-detection AG (high accuracy) can achieve precise focus even when shooting in 4K.
Quick or Slow Motion
Up to 5x Slow Motion and up to 60x Quick Motion can be recorded in camera at up to 50Mbps in Full HD, then played back without post-production processing.
NOTE: Sound cannot be recorded and a SDHC/SDXC memory card of Class 10 or higher is required.
S-Gamut/S-Log Shooting
S-Gamut/S-Log enable wide dynamic range (max. 1300%) shooting for more expressive moviemaking in post production. The a6500 offers 14-stop latitude at S-Log3.
Rugged Exterior & Reliability
A magnesium alloy body, a shutter tested to 200,000 release cycles** and much more highlights the a6500 camera's all-around toughness and reliability. In addition, rear shutter braking supresses blur-inducing vibration and shutter sound. This optimizes the image sensor resolution and performance, plus extends shutter durability.
As the body construction is fom a magnesium alloy, the camera body is not just strong or rigid, but also lightweight. The strength of the exterior also helps the solid lens mount on this camera which can sustain large or heavy telephoto lenses during long shoot days.
The camera grip is molded and recessed to conform more closely to a hand's contour to secure your grip and optimize handling comfort.
Buttons and dials have been sealed and feature double-layered, interlocking components to prevent dust/moisture entry and provide reliable operation under tough weather conditions.

XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ & Tilting LCD
A high-contrast, high-resolution Tru-Finder™ XGA OLED viewfinder can display smooth action when 120fps mode is selected to permit easier tracking. The touchscreen can be adjusted to accommodate viewing situations. Tilt the LCD screen up about 90-degrees or down approximately 45-degrees to view the display from varied angles. The display is also sunlight visible.
